Though the hosts South Africa failed to advance in the Super Sixes stage, their opening batsman Herschelle Gibbs performed strongly during the 2003 ODI World Cup. During that tournament, Gibbs finished as the most run-scorer for South Africa as he scored 384 runs in six matches with an average of 96.00 and excellent strike-rate of 100.78.

Gibbs smashed one century and two half-centuries during that tournament. The right-handed batsman scored 143 runs off 141 balls against New Zealand (at Johannesburg on 16th February 2003). He also scored 87 not out and 73 runs against Kenya and Sri Lanka respectively.
