While Sri Lanka finished their journey in the 2003 ODI World Cup in the semi-final, their left-arm pacer Chaminda Vaas finished that tournament as the leading wicket-taker as he managed to claim 23 wickets in 10 matches. His overall bowling figures in that tournament were 88-14-331-23 with an average of 14.39 and an economy rate of 3.76.

Like Brett Lee, Vaas also managed to register 3+ wicket-hauls for five times in that tournament. His best bowling performance in that tournament was against Bangladesh in the Group Stage (at Pietermaritzburg on 14th February 2003) where Vaas finished with the bowling figures of 9.1-2-25-6. In that game, Vaas also claimed a hat-trick which he completed on the third ball of that game.
