WT20 2016 Preview: First Round – Ireland

When we talk about the associate nations in cricket, Ireland is always a name which strikes one’s mind. They are a team who play for respect which has been proven time and again through their performances. Since 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup, they have won million of hearts in the cricket world.

In T20I, though, Ireland has not earned the same kind of reputation as in ODI cricket. Till date, they only beat West Indies among the top 8 Test playing in T20I format. Apart from that, they beat Bangladesh and Zimbabwe once each; both in World T20.

But if one go by their recent performances, they are not in the very good form in T20Is. In the last year’s ICC World T20 Qualifier, the favourite Ireland finished in 3rd position. After WT20 2014, Ireland has won only 4 T20I out of 13 while the team has lost 7 T20Is and rests of 2 ended with no result. However, it was scarier for them in the year of 2015 where they only managed 1 win out of 8 T20Is (Lost-5 and N/R-2). Comparatively, their recent year performances are good as they won 3 T20Is out of 5 T20Is (Lost-2).

In World T20 2016, which will be held in India, Ireland is in a very tough group in the preliminary stage of the tournament. They are in the Group A along with Bangladesh, Netherlands and Oman and only the group winner will be advanced to the next round which is known as Super 10. The group is very tough for Ireland while Bangladesh is a very strong team and Netherlands has a good team in T20I. Winner of the group will enter Group 2 in the Super 10 stage where they will face Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan and the host nation India.

Ireland will begin their 2016 WT20 journey from 9th March against Oman and then they will take Bangladesh and Netherlands on 11th and 13th March, respectively. All the matches will be played at Dharamsala.
