Tamim Iqbal Receives Offer From Essex For Natwest T20 Blast
Tamim Iqbal’s scintillating form in the ICC Champions Trophy might have earned him a contract from Essex Eagles for the upcoming edition of the Natwest T20 Blast, England’s premier T20 tournament.
The left-handed batsman was in red-hot form in the eight-team tournament. The 28-year old began the proceedings in England on a brilliant note, scoring 102 in the warm-up tie against Pakistan before scoring a magnificent 128 against England in the tournament-opener.
In the following game, he missed his century by just five runs but failed to open his account in the must-win game against New Zealand. But fortunately, it did not prove costly for his team, as it defeated the Black Caps to secure a historic semifinal date with India. Tamim continued his free-scoring form in the semifinal match too, scoring 70 but his brilliant knock once again went in vain, as the Tigers were thrashed by India.
But his exploits with the bat, nevertheless, have brought him quite close to getting an offer from Essex Eagles. As per reports in the Bangladesh media, the southpaw has had already spoken to the officials of the Essex team and has now received the offer letter from the management. The reports are claiming that the opener got the offer after Bangladesh’s first two games of the Champions Trophy against host England and Australia where he smashed 128 and 95, respectively.
If Tamim goes on to accept the offer, he will share the dressing room with the likes of Ryan ten Doeschate Alastair Cook, Ravi Bopara. Tamim already has the experience of playing in England’s domestic tournaments. In 2011, he had played five games for Nottinghamshire and if things go according to the plan, the Bangladesh star will once again ply his trade in England.
The tournament, which is scheduled to start from July 7, will end on September 2. And if Essex, who will play their last group on August 18, makes it to the quarterfinal, they will miss the services of the Bangladesh star, as he will have to return for Bangladesh’s two-match Test series against Australia at home, starting from August 27.
