2017 ICC Women’s World Cup: Australia vs Sri Lanka – Chamari Atapattu’s Heroic Unbeaten 178 Goes In Vain With Meg Lanning’s Match Winning 152*

In the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup clash between Australia and Sri Lanka on Thursday at the County Ground (Bristol), Chamari Atapattu’s heroic 178* runs knock went in vain, as Australia Women comfortably clinched a victory with the skipper Meg Lanning’s unbeaten 152 runs effort.

After winning the toss, Australia Women sent Sri Lankan Women to bat first. When the other Sri Lankan batswomen were sent back to the pavilion in quick time, Chamari Atapattu stuck in the crease on the other hand. After coming onto bat in the very first over, Chamari remained unbeaten until the end of the innings, as she scored the third highest individual score in the Women’s ODI history (also it was the second highest individual score in the ICC Women’s World Cup). With the help of her innings, Sri Lanka Women were able to put a fighting total of 257/9 in 50 overs.

In reply, Australia Women comfortably chased down the target in 43.5 overs with the help of skipper Meg Lanning’s unbeaten 152 runs.

In the first innings, Sri Lanka Women lost their opener Nipuni Hansika in the very first over of the match. Australian right-arm pacer Ellyse Perry dismissed Nipuni for a duck on the 3rd delivery of the over through the LBW.

Another opener Chamari Polgampola and no. 3 batswoman Chamari Atapattu put up a 49-run partnership for the second wicket before Polgampola (6 runs) lost her wicket on Ashleigh Gardner’s delivery. Sri Lankan wickets were falling regularly, as nobody was giving the proper support to Chamari Atapattu. Only Shashikala Siriwardene and Eshani Lokusuriyage were the other Sri Lankan players who had the two-digit score, as they scored 24 and 13, respectively. In the meantime, the extras were the third highest scorer during Sri Lankan innings, as they read 19 in total.

Meanwhile, there was a totally opposite picture showing on Atapattu’s batting who was dominating Australian bowlers as the time goes on. With the help of 22 fours and six sixes, Atapattu remained unbeaten on 178 runs off 143 balls which helped the Sri Lankan team to go past 250 runs.

Every Australian bowlers bowled good on this track. Ellyse Perry (2/52), Kristen Beams (2/49) and Nicole Bolton (2/18) took two wickets each while Megan Schutt (1/50), Ashleigh Gardner (1/39) and Elyse Villani (1/22) claimed a wicket each. Only Belinda Vakarewa (0/22) remained wicket-less among the seven Australian bowlers.

In reply, Australian opener Beth Mooney was dismissed early for a duck. She was caught by Atapattu on Sripali Weerakkody’s bowling in just second over of the innings. However, Australia took total control of the match after that. Another opener Nicole Bolton and skipper Meg Lanning put an excellent 133-runs partnership for the second wicket, as Bolton was dismissed for 60 just after the completion of 25th over of the innings.

Ellyse Perry took the next step along with the skipper, as they comfortably finished the match with another impressive unbroken 124-run partnership for the third wicket. Perry was unbeaten for 39 runs while Lanning remained unbeaten with the second highest score by a captain in the Women’s ODI history.
