After the axing of Yuvraj Singh, Rahane was entrusted with the number four duty. When Rahane scored 79 in the first ODI against South Africa in January 2018, it looked as if he is there to stay.

But scores of 11, 8, 8, and 34* in the next four innings ended his stay in the middle order and he hasn’t played in the blues since. Not only he lost the middle order spot, but he was also refused out as the backup opener.

Nonetheless, his performance in the 2015 World Cup at no. 4 position was praiseworthy and full of elegance. In 25 innings, Rahane has scored 843 runs at an average of 36.65 at no. 4 spots in the batting line-up. Besides that, he can be used as a floater.
