On Sunday (21st July), during the Indian squad announcements for their upcoming international tour of West Indies and the USA, the chief selector MSK Prasad gave some crucial answer about the recent controversy with Ambati Rayudu. However, a senior BCCI official has questioned on Prasad’s claim on Rayudu’s fitness issue.
During the Indian team selection for the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, Ambati Rayudu remained in the centre of the news.
Ahead of the 2019 CWC, Rayudu was the regular ODI player who batted at the no.4 position. But due to his inconsistent performances, his place came under danger. Finally, the national selectors ignored him for the 15-member World Cup squad. However, Rayudu was in the standby squad for that tournament.
Later, in the middle of the 2019 CWC, the opener Shikhar Dhawan and all-rounder Vijay Shankar missed out the squad due to their respective injuries. However, Rayudu still didn’t earn the call-up for the national squad. Young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant replaced Dhawan while the uncapped ODI player Mayank Agarwal replaced Shankar. Meanwhile, Agarwal was also not in the World Cup standby squad.
Later, on 2nd July, when India were still busy in the 2019 CWC, Rayudu announced his international retirement.
MSK Prasad revealed why Ambati Rayudu missed out the World Cup squad
Talking about this matter on last Sunday (21st July), MSK Prasad brought out Rayudu’s fitness issue.
Prasad told in press conference, “There were certain programmes to see Rayudu comes into the setup. We (selection committee) don’t have anything against a particular player.
“When Rayadu was picked for the ODIs on the basis of his T20 performance, there was criticism, but we had some thoughts about him. When he failed the fitness test, we put him on a fitness programme. Due to certain combinations, he wasn’t picked, it doesn’t make the selection committee biased.”
A BCCI official is not impressed with that answer
However, one senior BCCI official hasn’t satisfied with this answer. Later, he questioned the fitness criteria process.
The BCCI official said as per IANS, “Who decided on the fitness criteria and has there been an official communication on the same? If there was no criteria officially communicated or discussed or approved by the board, how could one fail it? Seems that the selector didn’t really check all the dimensions before making this statement.”
After missing the initial 15-member World Cup squad, Ambati Rayudu mocked the selectors on his Twitter account.
Instead of Rayudu, the selectors chose Vijay Shankar for the no.4 batting position in the 2019 CWC. MSK Prasad mentioned Shankar as the three-dimensional cricketer.
Soon after that, Rayudu tweeted, “Just Ordered a new set of 3d glasses to watch the world cup.”
Just Ordered a new set of 3d glasses to watch the world cup 😉😋..

However, the selectors have never offended on that post. In fact, Prasad has just claimed that he enjoyed that timely tweet.
Talking about the surprising replacement selection as Mayank Agarwal, Prasad claimed that they were looking for the backup opener as India were suddenly facing opening batsman crisis.
