Aaron Finch Is Ready To Bat Down The Order During The World Cup

Australian limited-overs captain Aaron Finch is ready to bat down the order if necessary during the upcoming World Cup. Steven Smith and David Warner may return to the national team during the forthcoming World Cup, and Aaron Finch would not mind batting late to give them proper opportunities.

While Aaron Finch has recently struggled as an opener, Usman Khawaja has shined in the same place. During their recent India tour, opener Usman Khawaja hit his first two ODI centuries and also won the Player of the Series award after finishing the ODI series as the leading run-scorer. The left-handed batsman scored 383 runs in five innings with an average of 76.60.

Before the opening ODI of the five-match series against Pakistan in UAE, Aaron Finch told the reporters that he could comfortably bat at down the order in the upcoming World Cup to provide the proper chance to other top-order batsmen.

He said, “If that means me batting at six, I’ll comfortably do that. If it’s at the top, three or four – it doesn’t matter. Personal results aren’t what this side is about. I think that’s what has made our improvement as dramatic and quick as it has been. If you go in just solely focused on scoring a hundred or thinking ‘if I bat five I’m not got to get a hundred, I don’t get enough opportunity’, that’s not what is best.”

Australians are not afraid to face Mohammad Abbas

In last October, when Aaron Finch played his first two Tests during Australia’s tour of UAE, Pakistan pacer Mohammad Abbas consistently troubled him. While they met four times in that series, the right-arm pacer dismissed him thrice.

Moreover, Mohammad Abbas (17 wickets) was the leading wicket-taker in that series, and he won the Player of the Series award after Pakistan won that series by 1-0.

However, Aaron Finch feels that they will play better cricket against him in the ODI series. While Mohammad Abbas has played 14 Tests, he is waiting to make his debut in limited-overs international cricket.

The Aussie captain said, “He (Abbas) had some great success with the red ball in the Test matches against us. He bowled very consistently, just moved the ball enough each way.

“But I think it’ll be totally different conditions, different format. Your mindset is definitely a bit different as a batter in one-day cricket.

“That’ll be a good challenge again though, there are a few guys in our side who he did have some success against. So it’s about coming up with a plan for him.”

After the incredible limited-overs series victories in India, Aaron Finch-led Australian side is now set to face Pakistan in UAE. Meanwhile, the Pakistan selectors have rested some key senior players from this series, including the captain Sarfraz Ahmed.

However, Aaron Finch doesn’t want to take the younger Pakistan ODI side lightly.

He said, “They’ve still got a lot of quality players and you can’t just afford to focus on one player. It’s a bit like India – if you put too much focus on Virat Kohli you then forget about Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni and these guys.

“So it’s important you put as much time and effort into every player and make sure your plans are as solid as they can be.”

In the recently concluded India tour, Australia played impressive cricket. After winning the two-match T20I series by 2-0, they incredibly won the five-match ODI series by 3-2. At one stage, Australia was trailing by 2-0 in that ODI series. But the desperate visiting side didn’t give up and snatched the ODI series by setting an outstanding example.

The Australian captain is now focusing on carrying the momentum.

Aaron Finch added, “Some people would have taken a bit more notice (of Australia) over the last couple of weeks.”

Australia is set to play the five-match ODI series against Pakistan in the ongoing UAE tour. The first ODI of the series will be played on this Friday (22nd March) at Sharjah.
