AB De Villiers batted at No. 6 which raised a few eyebrows in the match between RCB and KXIP where Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar batted ahead of him. In-form AB De Villiers had hit an unbeaten 73 off 33 balls 3 days ago against KKR.
But the move didn’t pay off as left-handed Washington Sundar scored only 13 off 14 balls and Shivam Dube only 23 off 19 balls whereas AB De Villiers could manage only 2 runs off 5 balls.
AB De Villiers Will Support Strategy Of Coach And Captain
The decision to send left-handers ahead to attack KXIP leg spinners was unsuccessful. AB De Villiers was however not upset by the decision and instead said he agreed and supported the call by coach and captain.
He further added that it was a legitimate decision as teams prefer left-handers to face leg spinners and will focus on batting wherever the team needs him to bat.
“At the outset, let me say I am a team man. If the coach and captain agree a strategy, I am not going to second guess them. I will always support them. That’s the way successful teams function,” De Villiers wrote in his column for Hindustan Times.
“RCB chose to bat first against Kings XI Punjab, and I was expecting to go in at No. 4 as usual. In fact, when the second wicket fell, with our score 62 for two in the sixth over, I started to make my way through the gate that leads out to the wicket.
“At that precise moment, I was asked to wait because the coach and captain had decided to send out left-handers to face the two KXIP leg-spinners, who were bowling at the time.”
Ravi Bishnoi and Murugan Ashwin were the two right arm legbreak spinners who were bowling then as the coach Simon Katich and skipper Virat Kohli thought not to send right-handed AB De Villers. Left-handed all-rounders Washington Sundar and Shivam Dube were sent instead which was criticized by experts.
AB De Villiers: It Was A Legitimate Cricketing Decision As Teams Prefer Left-Handers To Face Leg Spin Bowling
AB De Villiers came to the crease with only 4 overs remaining and RCB at 127/4 in the 16th over.
“That was a legitimate cricketing decision. Teams all around the world often prefer left-handed batsmen to face leg-spin bowling. I did not question the call at the time it was made, and I do not question the call now. There is absolutely no problem from my side.
“For my part, I am eager and willing to bat wherever and whenever the team needs me, and to help RCB advance our campaign to realize our potential and win this league.”
Kings XI Punjab won the match against RCB by 8 wickets in the last ball after both skipper KL Rahul and fit again Chris Gayle, playing his first match in IPL 2020. struck fifties. RCB though managed a respectable 171/6 after Chris Morris produced much-needed fireworks at the end and managed to score 25 not out off 8 balls. The last over by Mohammed Shami saw 24 runs.
