Faf du Plessis & AB de Villiers talks during the game.

Despite leading his team to consecutive series wins over Australia, Faf du Plessis is set to hand-over the captaincy to regular skipper AB de Villiers on the latter’s return to international cricket next month in the home series against Sri Lanka.

South Africa selectors have made it clear that de Villiers’ captaincy is safe as of now with du Plessis to remain as his stand-in.

“At the moment it’s clear to us that Faf is stand-in captain and AB is the current captain when he comes back, AB is still the captain,” ” chairman of selectors Linda Zondi said.

Faf du Plessis-led South Africa whitewashed Australia 5-0 in the ODI series at home last month. He was retained as the skipper for the Test tour due to unavailability of de Villiers, who is yet to recover from elbow injury.

With a win at Hobart, Proteas sealed their third consecutive Test series win in Australia. The win stands out to be the best one as the visitors lacked the services of Dale Steyn and de Villiers himself. Still, the new captain led a comparatively inexperienced team to a great win with a game remaining.

The third and final Test will start from November 24. It’ll be a D/N fixture at Adelaide.
