From Thursday (1st August), Test cricket has entered into the new era. Apart from the beginning of ICC World Test Championship, now Test cricket is also experiencing the names and numbers on the back of shirts. However, the legendary Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist feels the names and numbers in Test cricket are the rubbish ideas.

Finally, the wait is over as the inaugural ICC World Test Championship (2019-21) has begun on Thursday through the Ashes 2019. Also, every player is now carrying their names and numbers on the back of the white shirts. Though it is very common in limited-overs cricket, it has happened for the first time in Test cricket history.

Steven Smith was the star of the day one of the Ashes 2019

On the first day of the Ashes 2019, Australia were in deep trouble at the beginning as they were struggling on 122/8 after deciding to bat first at Edgbaston (Birmingham). However, Steven Smith played a great knock which changed the entire momentum of the day. It was the comeback Test match for David Warner, Steven Smith and Cameron Bancroft after their suspensions due to their involvement in the sandpaper-gate incident during the 2018 Cape Town Test.

Smith hit his 24th Test century that massively helped the visitors to come back into the game. Smith scored 144 runs off 219 balls with the help of 16 fours and two sixes.

The no.5 batsman Head scored 35 runs while the no.10-positioned batter Siddle played a crucial knock of 44 runs.
