The 20-year-old uncapped youngster Will Pucovski has become a big debate part ahead of the Test series against India. Several Australian greats have supported him to play as the opening partner of David Warner while replacing Joe Burns. But Australian head coach Justin Langer had said that they were not looking to break the ‘synergy’ between Burns and Warner.
Former Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist has also kept his opinion, but his stand is neutral. He wishes to try and test the current pair of Australia’s Test team, and if they failed to produce desirable results, the youngster could be given a chance.
Adam Gilchrist Explains Why It Is Harder For Will Pucovski To Replace Joe Burns
While talking to foxsports.com.au, Gilchrist gave the reason why Australia’s team management is not much interested in changing the opening combination.
As per him, the selectors believe that Joe Burns and David Warner complement each other very well and so, they are reluctant not to break their partnership. He also added that they might also have not found a strong reason to replace Burns.
“It’s only my opinion, but I detect that the selectors and the team really enjoy the partnership of Joe Burns and David Warner,” Adam Gilchrist told foxsports.com.au.
“There is a fair bit of that strong reason in the case of Pucovski. (But) They’ll be reluctant to break that (partnership of Warner and Burns) up without really strong reason. They feel they complement each other and they have a yin and yang partnership,” he added.
Adam Gilchrist added that the performance of Joe Burns for Australia A gives the selectors more clear picture to home gives the priority for the selection.
“It could very much weigh on that Australia A game and what comes of that. Should he (Burns) miss out there and Pucovski nails another big one, the pressure may then be on to make the change,” Adam Gilchrist further said.
Will Pucovski had impressed with his performance for Victoria in Sheffield Shield. He scored a consecutive double century and thus, he could not be ignored for the much-awaited series. It will be interesting to know the Australian team will go with the youngster or an experienced player for the opening position.
Meanwhile, the Test series will begin in Adelaide with the day-night Test match on December 17. The last three Tests will be hosted in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Before the Test series, there will be two warmup games between India A and Australia A
