Afghanistan Announce 23-Man Squad for the ICC World Cup 2019, Training Camp in South Africa
Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) on Friday (April 6), has named their much-awaited squad comprised of 23 members for a training camp. The Afghan team is scheduled to train in South Africa ahead of the ICC World Cup 2019.
The quadrennial event will run between May 30 and July 14 in the United Kingdom (UK).
Meanwhile, the Afghanistan team has departed to the southernmost country, South Africa.
Interestingly, ACB has sacked regular skipper Asghar Stankzai now known as Asghar Afghan.
Moreover, Gulbadin Naib has been appointed as the new captain, whereas, leg-spin sensation Rashid Khan is the Vice-captain.
Furthermore, Afghan will represent the national team as a player.
According to the statement of Dawalt Ahmadzai, the ACB’s chief of selectors, he stated that the board is expecting Naib to follow what Afghan has already achieved during his four-year tenure as a skipper.
Ahmadzai maintained that Afghan has brought laurels to the war-torn country and has achieved a lot as a batsman across formats.
“Asghar Afghan, who captained team Afghanistan for a period of around four years, achieved a lot and made the country proud, and I hope Gulbadin Naib will be able to continue his legacy at the helm of the team’s affairs,” Ahmadzai said in a press release.
Ahmadzai has hailed all-rounder Naib. He is hopeful to see the prominent face of Afghanistan cricket delivering for the senior team.
“Gulbadin Naib is a senior player who has also led the Mis-e-Ainak regional team on many occasions and we hope that he will play a vital role in the team’s future success,” Ahmadzai stated.
On the basis of a major revamping, Rashid will lead Afghanistan in the Twenty20 Internationals.
Besides, Rahmat Shah will don the captain’s hat in the traditional format.
The Afghanistan squad for training camp in South Africa will partake in six practice games.
However, the team will return to Kabul soon after the camp. ACB will announce the coveted 15 member squad for the twelfth edition of the ICC World Cup 2019.
In addition, ICC has set April 23 for the final squad submission.
Afghanistan will kick-off their World Cup campaign by facing Australia on June 1st at the Bristol County Ground.
