On Monday (11 February), a cricketer and some goons attacked the former Indian cricketer Amit Bhandari for not selecting the cricketer in Delhi U23 squad. Virender Sehwag criticised this incident and called for strict action against the attacker.
The former Indian pacer and Delhi captain Amit Bhandari is currently the chairman of Delhi senior cricket team’s selection committee. On Monday afternoon, he was busy watching Syed Mushtaq Ali trials of Delhi cricket team at St. Stephen’s College grounds (New Delhi). Suddenly, the goons entered the ground and attacked him brutally.
According to CricketNext, Delhi U23 cricketer Anuj Dedha and his goons attacked him with the hockey sticks and iron rods. While the Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) announced the 56-probable squad on January 28, Anuj Dedha was in the list. However, he failed to enter in the final list for the U23 selection. According to the reports, the goons and the alleged player ran away from the spot before Police arrival.
Due to that brutal attack, Amit Bhandari received several injuries on his head, ear and leg. Soon, another selection committee member Sukhvinder Singh took him to Sant Paramanand Hospital at Civil Lines. Though he is out of danger, CricketNext reported that he needed six stitches to the head.
After making his international debut in June 2000, Amit Bhandari played two ODIs, where he picked up five wickets. From 1997/98 to 2008, the right-arm pacer played 95 first-class matches and 105 List A games. He took 314 wickets in his first-class career and also took 153 wickets in his List-A career.

On the other hand, another former India and Delhi opener Gautam Gambhir also criticised that incident. The 37-year-old called for a life ban on the alleged cricketer.
He wrote on his official Twitter account, “Disgusted to see this happen right in the heart of the Capital. This can’t slip under the carpet and I will personally ensure it doesn’t. To begin with I am calling for a life ban from all cricket for the player who orchestrated this attack post his non-selection.”
