Anil Kumble Prefers Wicket Taking Bowlers Over All Rounders In T20 World Cup
Former Indian skipper Anil Kumble believes the Indian team should have wicket-taking bowlers over all-rounders in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Recently, the Indian think tank had dropped both Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav from the T20I squad in an attempt to strengthen their lower-order batting. However, the move didn’t pay dividends and the team management had to go back to their wrist spinners.
Kumble believes it is imperative to take wickets at regular intervals in the T20 format and both Chahal and Kuldeep are wicket-takers. The former leg-spinner added that both Chahal and Kuldeep will be handy when the ball will get wet in the dew conditions.
Chahal and Kuldeep have done a good job.
“I certainly believe that you need wicket-taking bowlers and someone like a Kuldeep and Chahal need to be a part of that in my view. Yes, there are instances where you know the ball gets wet because of the dew, then is it right for two wrist-spinners to be there,” former India captain Kumble told CricketNext in an interview on Monday.
“It is very important that you need to start looking out for wicket-taking options. If it means that you need to bring in just fast bowlers who you believe will pick up wickets, rather than looking at all-rounders, which I think this team is looking for; I think that’s the critical aspect.”
India needs to get their combination right before the World Cup and they need to consistently play those players who are mostly going to be part of the playing XI. Kumble added that the decision should be taken on the basis of which players can perform at their best in the Australian conditions, where the next T20 World Cup will take place.
“It’s very important that India starts thinking about who will perform in Australian conditions and who is that bowler who has the ability to pick up wickets because that’s what will put pressure on the opposition,” he said.
India has been altering their playing XI as they have throwing opportunities to young players in the shortest format. In fact, the Virat Kohli-led side picked a full-strength team in the T20I series against the West Indies after a long time. Thus, the Indian team needs to get their planning in place.
