Anrich Nortje has been a surprise and a standout performer in IPL 2020 although his Delhi Capitals pace partner Kagiso Rabada is on top of the wicket-takers’ list. Anrich Nortje has 12 wickets to show for his efforts and hasn’t faced problems in adapting to the pitches in UAE.
Anrich Nortje is joint 5th with Rajasthan Royals pacer Jofra Archer in the list headed by Kagiso Rabada with 19 wickets in 9 matches averaging 14.42.
Anrich Nortje Is Trying To Keep It Simple And Focuses On Good Line And Length
Delhi Capitals brought in pacer Anrich Nortje as a replacement for England’s all-rounder pacer Chris Woakes. The South African pacer Anrich Nortje, has represented the national team in 6 Tests, 7 ODIs and 3 T20Is where he has taken 19, 14 and 2 wickets respectively.
He was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of IPL 2019, but missed out on the season due to injury. Hence, the IPL 2020 is the right-arm pacer’s maiden IPL season, and he has started well by being amongst the top 5 so far in the leading wicket-takers list.
Speaking to ANI, the Proteas pacer revealed on adjusting to the conditions and bowling to the likes of RCB skipper Virat Kohli and MI skipper Rohit Sharma besides being around a young and energetic DC outfit.
With an economy rate of 7.75, Anrich Nortje has been top-class even as he bowled to some of the best T20 batsmen in the world currently like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and AB de Villiers.
The pacer has impressed most with his line and length and says that it is more about working on own strengths rather than focusing on who is at the batting crease.
“Try and keep it simple. Better the player, more you have to focus. A good length is a good length and then work around our strengths and see where we can beat them and try and get them out. Even to Rohit, a good line and length will be difficult to play as long as we can hit the mark,” he explained.
Anrich Nortje has been good when it comes to surprising the batsmen with bouncers as far his strengths are concerned. The pacer loves to use bouncers which are his weapons.
“No point bowling just six full balls every time. You need to push the batsmen and make them aware of what you have whether they get out that ball or next ball but it is a weapon you have to use as a fast bowler. You cannot let them just lunge forward every time, especially in T20 cricket it makes life so much easier,” he said.
Anrich Nortje’s best figures came against KKR where he had figures of 3/33.
Anrich Nortje Feels Spinners Will Come Into Picture Sooner
In fact, even though the wickets were expected to help spinners primarily, pace bowlers have done well. But Anrich Nortje feels spinners are slowly coming into the picture as the IPL moves towards the fag end with the first half already being over. Spinners like Yuzvendra Chahal and Rashid Khan are among top 10 wicket-takers so far.
“I think they are going to play a massive role later in the tournament. In general, I think if you bowl a good line and length there is a lot offered by the wicket and you don’t need to do too many things. I think we just try to keep it as simple as possible,” he said.
The young DC unit led by youngster Shreyas Iyer has been brilliant, and the results are there for everyone to see as Delhi are at the top of the points table with 14 points in 9 matches with 7 wins.
“On the field, we try and bounce ideas off one another but off the field, we speak a lot of nonsense and have fun.” he smiled.
Anrich Nortje has an interesting take on the saliva ban. He believes the change of balls due to previous balls being lost after being hit for sixes has in some cases impacted games rather than the saliva ban.
“I am not one to get a lot of swing, so not really for me. I think the ball getting replaced can be a good thing and a bad thing rather than the saliva.” he signed off.
Anrich Nortje averages 23.25 and has an economy rate of 7.75 in IPL 2020 so far.
