Asia Cup 2018: Pakistan is Favourites for the Tournament – Sunil Gavaskar
Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar believes Pakistan are the favourites for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2018. In fact, Pakistan plays most of its cricket in the UAE, as it is their adopted home ground. Thus, the Men in Green are familiar with the pitches as well as the conditions. Furthermore, Pakistan has played good cricket in the recent past, which makes them favourites for the tournament.
Pakistan has always had a potent bowling line-up. Therefore, they will rely on their bowlers to deliver the goods. Meanwhile, it is not going to be a cakewalk for Sarfraz Ahmed led side. Pakistan will begin their Asia Cup campaign against Hong Kong on 16 September. They will take on arch-rivals India on 19 September.
Pakistan is familiar with the conditions.
“Pakistan, the ICC Champions Trophy winners, start as favourites because not only have they got a well-balanced team, but they will be playing on their ‘home’ ground. The familiarity with the pitches and the weather conditions is always a plus and Pakistan will want to add the Asia Cup to their trophy cabinet. With their former charismatic captain as their country’s Prime Minister now, they will undoubtedly be inspired to give him the Asia Cup as a gift,” Sunil Gavaskar wrote for TOI.

Meanwhile, the Little Master also believes the Asia Cup gives an opportunity to Asian teams to get ready for the next year World Cup. Teams can work on their weaknesses and try to get their combination right.
“Asia Cup 2018 gives the teams participating a good warm-up for the ICC World Cup. The more matches the teams play, the better their preparation. They will also get a fair idea of the areas they need to tighten up on before the World Cup. The teams can start bonding in these games. They will know who are the players who can take the pressure and who doesn’t quite have that fire in the belly to take his team forward,” Sunil added.
Asia Cup has lost its shine.
On the other hand, Sunil Gavaskar thinks the multi-nation tournament has lost a bit of its excitement because of the T20 Leagues across the globe. However, the former legend believes all the players will look to give their best effort.
“The Asia Cup may have lost a bit of its shine in the eyes of the cricket lovers of the region, thanks to all the T20 leagues that have cropped up all over the world, but make no mistake, the players of all the participating countries want to win the magnificent trophy to have the bragging rights in the region,” Sunil Gavaskar penned down.
Pakistan will like to make the most of the known conditions and it will definitely give them the advantage. Asia Cup 2018 will begin today as Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will start the six-nation tournament.
