Asia Cup 2018: We Have the Potential and Players to Beat Any Side – Angelo Mathews
Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews believes his side has the potential and players to beat any side in the forthcoming Asia Cup. In fact, Sri Lanka hasn’t won an ODI series in the recent past. They also went to lose a five-match series against South Africa by 3-2.
However, the Island nation came back hard in the final two ODIs. Thus, Mathews believes that those two wins were the shot in the arm. The Sri Lankan skipper believes it is pivotal to be at the top of their game. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka will begin their Asia Cup campaign against Bangladesh on 15 September.
Sri Lanka will aim to bring their best to the table.
“There’s no guarantee that we can win the Asia Cup but if we play to our potential we have the skills and the players to win against any side provided we do well in all three departments,” said Mathews.

Sri Lanka second match will be against the exuberant team of Afghanistan on 17 September.
“We can’t take Bangladesh and Afghanistan or any team for that matter lightly. This is a tight tournament where the margin of error has to be very minimal or you could find yourself out of the tournament after the first round. The team that marginalizes its mistakes to a minimum will win,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka has recalled their talismanic fast bowler Lasith Malinga back into their squad. Mathews has the confidence that the veteran pacer will deliver the goods at the big stage despite being out of action from the International circuit.
“I back Malinga to the core. He can deliver on a big stage although he hasn’t played one-day cricket for some time. We picked him after only playing in a T20 tournament because he has the skills. I have the fullest confidence in him,” said Mathews.
Sri Lanka will need to be at the top of their game if they are to savour success in the Asia Cup. In fact, Sri Lanka is one of the most successful sides in the folklore of the tournament as they have won it on five occasions.
