A big chance for the Aussies to get back to no.1 rankings in Tests. Australia is going to play a 2 match series agaisnt Pakistan starting in UAE from tomorrow.
If Australia clean sweep Pakistan, i.e. beat them by 2-0, they will reach to 125 points, a point ahead of South Africa, who is at 124 points. However, if Australia wins by 1-0, it will move to 124 points, but South Africa will remain no.1 because of a 0.24 point advantage. Yes, it is a closr fight for the no.1 Test rankings. The task for Australia at the moment is to win the 2 matches and get back to top rankings. However, in between South Africa is also going to play tests, so it is harder to tell which team will go as no.1 Test team in 2015.
The good thing for Australia is that a series loss won’t kick them out of the no.2 rank. They will lose 5 points if they lose the series 1-0 and 6 points if they lose by 2-0. A series draw will cut 3 points of their points tally.
On the other hand, Pakistan can move to 3rd spot with the help of a clean sweep and can’t fall behind the 6th spot.
Australia reclaimed the no.1 Test spot on May 1 after the ICC update which rolls every 4 years. The South Africa then got to no.1 after they beat Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka in July.
