Former India skippers, Mohammed Azharuddin and Sunil Gavaskar, have shared high praise for MS Dhoni. The ex-India captain scored an unbeaten 87 during the MCG ODI. On Friday, India also won the match by seven wickets and thus the three-match ODIs 2-1. In the game, contributions from captain Virat Kohli and Kedar Jadhav also supported Dhoni. Though Virat scored 46 runs, Kedar remained unbeaten on 61.
Dhoni kept his cool – Azharuddin
During the three ODIs, MS Dhoni completed half-century in each one of them, averaging 193. Off the three games, he failed to help India cross the winning line on one occasion. Meanwhile, at the Adelaide Oval and the MCG, he kept his cool and didn’t lose his wicket; something Mohammed Azharuddin appreciated and lauded him for. Speaking to Sports Tak after India’s famous series win, Azhar said Dhoni defied the odds to sit at the top.
He added MS didn’t have the match practice leading to the Australia ODIs, and still he remained his calm and did his job well. Furthermore, Azharuddin pressed on the fact that the best players in the team should bat in top five.
“I have always said our main batsmen should play in the first five. Dhoni played really well on Friday. After Kohli’s wicket, Dhoni kept his cool and took the game forward. Kedar Jadhav also batted well. As far as India’s batting order is concerned, I think Rishabh Pant will be slotted in at No.6 [for the World Cup]. The more India play with this batting order in the coming days the better. Dhoni, before coming to Australia, did not have that match practice and he will also get those chances in the future games,” he said.
Absolute terrific to see Dhoni getting the Player of the Series award – Gavaskar
Dhoni, for his phenomenal performance off his bat, received the Player of the Series award. Sunil Gavaskar, talking to India Today hailed India and Dhoni in particular. The legendary captain said he was delighted to see MS Dhoni winning the Player of the Series award. He also talked highly of his commitment and fitness.
“I am delighted with the way India have performed.. just becoming the second team to win a Test and ODI series in Australia. It’s never easy,” Gavaskar told India Today. “It is a fantastic achievement. Absolutely terrific to see Dhoni get the man-of-the-series award. Don’t forget he keeps wickets and to do that for 50 overs and come out and bat… Full credit to the man for his fitness and commitment to Indian cricket.”
Being a veteran of the game, MS ensured India didn’t suffer any hiccups while chasing in Adelaide and MCG. Sunil Gavaskar pressed on the same fact.
“You need the partnerships and that’s what he got from Dinesh Karthik the other day and Kedar Jadhav in Melbourne but don’t take anything away from the way he made sure there was no collapse. Had Dhoni got out, India would have struggled,” Gavaskar said.
Meanwhile, India will now face New Zealand in the five ODIs and three T20Is, starting January 23rd.
