Australia vs India 2018: Shikhar Dhawan Overtakes Virat Kohli for Most T20I Runs in Calendar Year
India’s southpaw batsman Shikhar Dhawan has overtaken his skipper Virat Kohli for most T20I runs in a calendar year. Dhawan went past Kohli’s tally during his fine knock of 76 runs of just 42 balls in the first T20I against Australia. However, Dhawan’s knock went in vain as India lost the match by four runs.
Shikhar Dhawan also leapfrogged Pakistan’s opener Fakhar Zaman total in 2018 to become leading run-getter in the ongoing year. The Indian left-hander has now scored 646 runs in 16 matches at an average of 44.62 and this was his sixth T20I fifty in the T20I version. Pakistan opener Zaman has scored 576 runs in 17 matches whereas Dhawan’s opening partner Rohit Sharma has amassed 567 runs in 2018.
Dhawan timed the ball to perfection.
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli had gathered 641 runs in 15 matches in 2016 when he was in sublime form in the shortest version of the game.
On the other hand, India could not cross the line in the first T20I as they lost by four runs. Dhawan struck the ball sweetly and was able to find the middle of his bat. The left-hander scored 10 fours and two sixes in his blistering knock. In fact, this is only the second time when Shikhar Dhawan scored a half-century in T20I and Indian team lost the game.
Dhawan had scored a fine knock of 92 runs in the final T20I against the Windies to get back into form. Thus, he was able to carry on with his staggering form.
However, India lost KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, and Shikhar Dhawan in quick succession to push themselves on the backfoot. Although, Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant were able to get India into the contest but could not apply the finishing touches.
The second T20I will take place at Melbourne on November 23 and Dhawan would like to continue in the similar fashion.
