ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 is about to conclude. It is left with an only match – the grand finale. On this Sunday (8th March), the hosts and defending champions Australia Women will face India Women in the much-awaited final of this tournament at the historic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

The ICC WT20 2020 started with the match between the Group A teams Australia Women and India Women at Sydney Showground Stadium (Sydney) on 21st February 2020. India Women began this tournament with a solid victory against Australia Women by 17 runs.

Since then, while India women have maintained their winning momentum, Australia women have not lost another game in this tournament yet.

India women finished the Group stage as the champions of the Group A with eight points after winning all the four matches.

Meanwhile, Australia women won all the three remaining games of Group A and finished the Group stage as the runners-up in their group with six points.

The first semi-final of this tournament, which was the match between Group A champions India Women (8 points) and Group B runners-up England Women (6 points), was completely washed out in the rain.

As India Women managed to get a higher point than England Women before the semi-finals of this tournament, the Asian team advanced to the final of this tournament.

However, the second semi-final between Australia Women and South Africa Women were played on the same day (5th March) and also at the same venue (Sydney Cricket Ground) of the first semi-final of this tournament.

Though that game was also affected in the rain, it ultimately had a result as the hosts won by five runs (DLS method).

While the current edition is the seventh edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup history, Australia Women will play their sixth final in this tournament history on this Sunday. They have won four times this trophy (2010, 2012, 2014 and 2018) including the previous edition in 2018.

If they win the ongoing edition, it will be their fifth trophy in this tournament but first as the hosts. After England Women (2009), Australia Women have the chance to become the ICC WT20 WC champions as the hosts.

On the other hand, India Women will play their first final in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup history. Their previous best was finishing as the semi-finalist and that too for thrice (2009, 2010 and 2018).

If they win this ongoing trophy, India Women will become the fourth different side (after England Women, Australia Women and West Indies Women) and first Asian side to win the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
