Pakistan newly appointed T20I captain Babar Azam is likely to get a leadership role in ODIs and Test format as well, as per the latest report. The Pakistan Cricket Board has decided to invest in their best batsman. Hence, it would be interesting to note how Azam takes up responsibility.
The talented batsman is also likely to get captaincy reins for the One Day International format. Sarfaraz Ahmed was sacked after Pakistan lost 0-3 in the T20I series against Sri Lanka. Pakistan could not make it to the semifinals’ stages of the World Cup as they finished at the fifth place in the points table. Furthermore, Ahmed’s form with the bat was on the decline and he had to pay the price.
Babar Azam will look to lead with aplomb.
As Pakistan will play their next ODI series next year against the Netherlands, the Pakistan Cricket Board had decided not to reveal the new ODI skipper.
On the other hand, Azhar Ali has been given the captaincy baton for the Test matches. Consequently, Babar Azam is expected to serve as Ali’s deputy in the longest form of the game.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan is expected to be named as the vice-captain in the T20I version.
Babar Azam has been Pakistan’s best batsman. It would be interesting to note how he will handle the captaincy role. It is not going to be easy for the young lad and he would need to learn how to handle the pressure.
Babar Azam’s first captaincy assignment is going to be a difficult one as Pakistan will tour Australia in November. Pakistan will play three T20Is and two Test matches on tour Downunder. The first T20I will take place at Sydney. It is going to be a crucial tour for the number one T20I side as the World T20 will take place in Australia next year.
