Pakistan chief selector and head coach Misbah-ul-Haq believes limited-overs skipper Babar Azam is very close to being in the same league as Virat Kohli, Steven Smith, and Joe Root. Misbah added that he is not a big fan of comparing players with each other but he feels Babar Azam is on his way to join the list of the big players.
In fact, Babar Azam is often compared with Indian captain Virat Kohli, though the latter has played almost double the matches than the former. Meanwhile, Babar Azam has definitely shown the right skills to go a long way in his career. The right-hander has ticked the right boxes and he is expected to get even better with more experience.
Babar Azam is on the right track.
Misbah-ul-Haq, the former Pakistan skipper, believes Babar Azam understands the fact that he has to work harder on his skills if he has to better someone like Virat Kohli.
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli, Steven Smith, Joe Root, and Kane Williamson are the fab four of the cricket world. All of them have been consistent performers for their respective teams and Babar Azam still has a lot of catching up to do.
“I don’t like comparisons but Babar is currently very close to being in the same class as Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, or Joe Root,” Misbah said in an interview with Youtube channel, Cricket Baaz.
“He believes in the work ethic that if you want to better Kohli you have to work harder than him at your skills, fitness, and game awareness.”
On the other hand, Babar Azam was handed over the T20I captaincy in the fag end of 2019. PCB recently also gave the ODI captaincy to the 25-year old and it would be interesting to see how he will lead his troops. Azam had said that he wants to be attacking in his leadership and wants to adopt the Imran Khan’s style of captaincy.
“Making him the T20 captain was a tester. We wanted to see how he will respond to this challenge. All of us agree that he has done a very good job and his biggest plus is that being among the world’s top players he leads by example,” Misbah said.
“If you are a performer like Babar then it becomes easier for you to motivate the rest of the team and get things done.
Babar Azam has scored 3359 runs in 74 ODI matches at an impressive average of 54.17. The stylish batsman also has an average of more than 50 in the T20I format and he is currently the number one T20I batsman. Babar will look to lead the team with aplomb and he has the experience of leading the Under-19 side.
