Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum created history in the first-ever game of the IPL history by scoring a century. In that opening game of the IPL 2008 against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) opener completed his century in 53 balls and scored 158 not out off 73 balls (10 fours and 13 sixes). His batting helped the KKR team to score 222/3 in the first innings (20 overs). Till the IPL 2019, it is the only century for the KKR. Later, KKR won that match by 140 runs after bundling out RCB for just 82 runs (15.1 overs).

In the IPL 2015, McCullum hit his second and last IPL century when he was serving for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). It was the fourth game of that tournament, where CSK faced the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and scored 209/4 (20 overs) in the first innings. McCullum remained not out on 100 runs off 56 balls (7 fours and 9 sixes) as he completed that century on the final ball of that innings. Later, CSK won that match by 45 runs after restricting their opponents to 164/6 (20 overs).
