The fate of the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League is under threat because of the rapid spread of the deadly coronavirus. Recently, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had postponed the IPL to April 15 with the spike in Covid-19 cases in India as well as across the globe. Now, BCCI is considering shifting the IPL between August-September when there are chances that the world will recover from the pandemic.
In normal circumstances, the IPL was scheduled to start from 29th March with the match between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). But the deadly virus played spoilsport and forced the Indian board to postpone the IPL in paticular.
According to the new report, as informed by a known BCCI official, the board looks all possibilities to plan the game before the T20 World Cup as till then everybody is expecting that the disease will be contained.
“We are closely monitoring the situation, and we will take a call accordingly. We are looking at a window in August-September,” said a BCCI official who didn’t wished to be named.
Aisa Cup can be delayed for BCCI to host IPL:
If BCCI plans to host the lucrative league in September, the originally scheduled Asia Cup in that month might get postponed. Before going into the T20 World Cup 2020, India is also scheduled to play three T20Is in Australia. India’s three-ODI tour of Zimbabwe is also set to be rescheduled.
BCCI will have to convince the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) to postpone the Asia Cup to a later date. And, if it happens and the board gets over 30 days, IPL 2020 season might not get cancelled. On the other hand, if all the circumstances went against the board, they have to face a major loss.
So, the Sourav Ganguly-led board will try their best to host the 13th edition of IPL this year before the T20 World Cup which is scheduled in October in Australia.
