Team History
Chennai Super Kings went on to bid for big players like MS Dhoni, Matthew Hayden, Stephen Fleming (who later went to become their coach), Muttiah Muralitharan and Michael Hussey in 2008. India's captain at that time MS Dhoni was appointed as the skipper of CSK. Dhoni had recently led India to World T20 glory in 2007 and received the accolades. Meanwhile, Kepler Wessels who is one of the few players who has represented two International teams was appointed as the head coach.

Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni was the costliest player of the inaugural season as he brought for a whopping price of $1.5 million. The Chennai franchise went on to make their IPL debut on 19 April against Kings XI Punjab at Mohali.

MS Dhoni-led had gone on to win their first match by a margin of 33 runs. CSK had scored 240 runs after batting first. In fact, this was the highest tally of the tournament. Furthermore, the Men in Yellow went on to better their own score in 2010.

2008 Season:

Chennai Super Kings finished at the third place in the maiden season of the IPL. They went on to win eight matches out of the 14 group matches, to make their place in the playoff stages. MS Dhoni's men went on to defeat Kings XI Punjab in the second semifinal. CSK won the match convincingly as they won by nine wickets and with 31 balls to spare.

However, Chennai Super Kings could cross the line against Rajasthan Royals in the final of the IPL 2008. Rajasthan Royals were led by former Australian legendary spinner Shane Warne who took his team to three wickets win.

Chennai Super Kings were able to post 164 after they were put into bat by Shane Warne. Royals were able to get to target on the last ball of the match as the match went down to the wire.

Yusuf Pathan was the leading run-getter in the final of IPL 2008. The combative right-hander went on to score 56 runs off just 39 balls. Thus, the right-hander was also awarded the Man of the match. Meanwhile, Shane Watson was adjudged as the Player of the tournament for his consistent performance with both bat and ball.

For Chennai Super Kings, Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni scored 421 and 414 runs respectively.

2009 Season:

The two top teams of the first season Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals had qualified to play in the Champions League Twenty20. However, the tournament could not start due to Mumbai attacks. Therefore, both of these franchises went on to receive a compensation of $5 million.

Meanwhile, Kiwis veteran batsman Stephen Fleming decided to call it a day on his career. Thus, the southpaw batsman took over the coaching mantle from Kepler Wessel. On the other hand, the second season of the IPL was hosted by South Africa, as there were general elections in India.

For the second season of the league, Chennai Super Kings went to bid for England talisman all-rounder Andrew Flintoff. The linchpin was taken for a whopping price of $1.55 million, which made him the costliest player of the season. Royal Challengers Bangalore also bought Kevin Pietersen for the same price.

However, the deal was not a happy one for the Chennai franchise as Andrew Flintoff could only play three matches. The English all-rounder suffered a knee injury which ruled him out of action for the entire season.

Furthermore, Super Kings also suffered a big blow as Michael Hussey decided to skip the second edition in order to prepare for the 2009 Ashes series.

Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings were able to finish as the second best team in the points table. The Men in Yellow won eight matches out of the 14 with one of their matches ending in No Result. Thus, Super Kings had 17 points in the points table as they were behind table toppers, Delhi Daredevils.

However, Chennai Super Kings journey in the IPL 2009 was ended by Royal Challengers Bangalore who beat them by six wickets in the second semifinal. CSK opener Matthew Hayden went on to top score in the IPL 2009 as the southpaw opener scored 572 runs in 12 matches. The combative left-hander scored five fifties in the second season and scored his runs at an average of 52 and strike rate of 144.81. Thus, Hayden was the winner of Orange cap (which is given to the highest run-getter) and was also awarded the Player of the tournament.  Suresh Raina scored 434 runs for CSK in 14 IPL matches in 2009.

Deccan Chargers were the winners of the 2009 season.

2010 Season:

Chennai Super Kings finished with seven wins in the group stages along with three other sides. However, Super Kings were able to make their place into the final four as they had a better net run-rate.

Men in Yellow were able to win the semifinal clash against defending Deccan Chargers by a big margin of 38 runs. Super Kings could only manage 142 in their allotted 20 overs. Subsequently, they were able to skittle out Chargers for 104 runs. Doug Bollinger was the chief destroyer of the Chargers innings as the southpaw Australian scalped four wickets and conceded only 13 runs in his four overs.

Super Kings went on to defeat arch-rivals Mumbai Indians by 22 runs in the final of the IPL 2010, to be crowned as the champions for the first time. Suresh Raina was the star of the show for the Chennai team as the left-hander scored a quickfire knock of 57 runs of 35 balls. The southpaw batsman scored three fours and as many sixes in his blistering innings. Hence, Raina was awarded the Man of the Match for his fine knock to help Chennai post 168 in 20 overs. However, Mumbai Indians could not get over the line despite Sachin Tendulkar's knock of 48 runs. The Master Blaster was the player of the tournament in IPL 2010. Sachin also top scored in the season with 620 runs.

Suresh Raina was instrumental in the success of the Chennai team as he scored 520 runs whereas their opener Murali Vijay amassed 458 runs in 15 matches.

Chennai Super Kings went on to repeat their form in the Champions League Twenty20. MS Dhoni-led side became the first IPL team to triumph in CLT20. Men in Yellow defeated Chevrolet Warriors by eight wickets. Murali Vijay was adjudged the Man of the match for his fine knock of 58 runs in the final. Furthermore, the flamboyant batsman also won the golden bat award. Ravichandran Ashwin was the Player of the tournament for taking most wickets in CLT20. However, Matthew Hayden decided to put on the shutters on IPL career after the 2010 season.

2011 Season:

Chennai Super Kings became the only first side to successfully defend their title in IPL 2011. Two teams were added in IPL 2011, as Pune Warriors India and Kochin Tuskers made their debuts in IPL. Meanwhile, the Indian Premier League Governing Council declared that one franchise should be able to retain four players ahead of the season.

Consequently, the Chennai franchise decided to retain their skipper MS Dhoni, deputy Suresh Raina, Murali Vijay and all-rounder Albie Morkel. These four players were retained for a total amount of $4.5 million. At IPL 2011 auction, Chennai Super Kings went on to buy players like Michael Hussey, Doug Bollinger, Ravichandran Ashwin and Subramanian Badrinath.

However, CSK didn't have an ideal start as they lost three matches out of the first five games. Subsequently, the defending champions were able to make a solid comeback. They won the next seven matches from their eight games to bounce back in style. Thus, they occupied the second position in the points table after winning nine matches out of 14.

Chennai Super Kings won the first qualifier against Royal Challengers by six wickets to make their place into the final for the third time. They met Royal Challengers Bangalore again the final of the season after Anil Kumble-led side defeated Mumbai Indian in the second qualifier by 43 runs.

CSK was able to repeat their magic against Royal Challengers to win the IPL title on the trot. The Men in Yellow obliterated RCB by a gargantuan margin of 58 runs. Chennai's opener Murali Vijay for the star of the show in the final as the flamboyant right-hander scored a fluent knock of 95 runs off just 52 balls, which helped him claim Man of the match award in the final. Michael Hussey also come to the party with a fine knock of 63 runs. Hence, the Chennai openers gave a perfect start to their team as they added 159 runs in 15 overs. Consequently, CSK posted a mammoth total of 205 runs in 20 overs.

However, RCB could not deliver with the bat as they succumbed to the pressure of a big score. RCB could only manage 147 runs in their quota of 20 overs. Ravichandran Ashwin scalped three wickets and gave away only 16 runs in his four overs.

Michael Hussey, Murali Vijay and Suresh Raina were all instrumental in the triumph of the Chennai side. All these batsmen scored more than 400 runs to take their side all the way. CSK skipper MS Dhoni also scored 392 runs in the season.

On the other hand, Ravichandran Ashwin scalped 20 wickets whereas Doug Bollinger took 17 wickets in the fourth season of the extravagant league. Albie Morkel went to pick up 15 wickets in the Twenty20 league. However, Chennai Super Kings could not deliver the goods in Champions League T20. They won a solitary match out of the four group matches to finish at the bottom of their group. Thus, they were kicked out.

2012 Season.

In IPL 2012, Chennai Super Kings brought the services of India's all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. The southpaw all-rounder was bought for a whopping margin of $2 million. However, the Chennai Super Kings could only win five matches out of the first 12 fixtures. Therefore, their future in IPL 2012 hanged by a thin thread.

Although, CSK once again made a fine return as they went on to win the next three matches out of the four games. Ergo, they were able to secure their play-off place after winning eight matches. Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kings XI Punjab also won eight matches each. However, CSK had a better net run rate which secured their final four places.

Chennai won the first the eliminator against Mumbai Indians by 38 runs to make their place in the second qualifier. CSK also won the second qualifier against Delhi Daredevils by a colossal margin of 86 runs to make their place into the final of the final for the fourth time.

However, Chennai could not complete their hat-trick of titles as they went on to lose the final against Kolkata Knight Riders. Chennai had made an above par score of 190 runs in their 20 overs in the final of the IPL 2012. Suresh Raina had scored a rocking knock of 73 runs off just 38 balls, albeit Raina's innings went in vain.

Manvinder Bisla played a brilliant knock of 89 runs off just 48 balls to help Kolkata get close to the target. Jacques Kallis also played a staggering inning of 69 runs off only 49 balls to help Kolkata become the IPL champions for the first time.

Suresh Raina was once again among the top 10 run-scorer as the left-hander scored 441 runs in 19 matches. However, CSK once again could come with the goods in the CLT20 as they managed two and two losses at the group stages.

2013 Season:

In 2013, Chennai decided to add more power to their bowling line-up. They signed five foreign and as many Indian bowlers. CSK ended at the top of the points table after 11 wins from 16 matches and also had the best net run-rate. In fact, this was the first time when CSK had ended at the numero uno position in the points table.

Chennai locked horns with Mumbai Indians in the first qualifier. They defeated Mumbai by a mammoth margin of 48 runs to once again make their way in the final of the tourney. Suresh Raina and Michael Hussey were the architects of CSK win with knocks of 86 and 82 runs respectively.

Meanwhile, it was a different story all together when CSK once again met the same opponents Mumbai Indians. The things changed upside down as Mumbai Indians won the final by 23 runs. Thus, Rohit Sharma was able to win his first title as Mumbai Indians skipper.

Mumbai made 148 runs after batting first. However, Chennai found themselves catching up in the game as they were tottering at 38-6. CSK skipper MS Dhoni played a valiant knock of an unbeaten fifty. Chennai opening batsman Michael Hussey got the Orange cap for top-scoring with 733 runs at an average of 52.35. Suresh Raina was once consistent as he scored 518 runs. Dwayne Bravo had a sublime season as he took 32 wickets to claim the Purple cap.

2014 season:

Chennai decided to retain MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo. Thus, they were left with the purse of INR 21 Crores. At the auction, Chennai went on to buy players like  Brendon McCullum, Dwayne Smith, Faf du Plessis, Ashish Nehra, Mohit Sharma. The first seven league matches of IPL 2014 were scheduled to be held in the UAE as the general elections collided with the tournament.

In the 2014 season, Chennai Super Kings won nine matches to end up at the third place in the points. Hence, they were able again able to secure their play-off stages place. Therefore, they met Mumbai Indians, who finished at the fourth place in the eliminator contest.

Chennai was able to get the better off the reigning champions as they won by seven wickets after chasing 174 runs convincingly by seven wickets and also had eight balls to spare. However, the MS Dhoni-led team could make their place into the final as their journey in the tournament was impeded by Kings XI Punjab in the second qualifier. Punjab defeated two-champions by 24 runs

Kolkata Knight Riders went on to win the IPL 2014 by three wickets to bag their second IPL title. CSK was able to take their revenge against KKR as the former defeated the latter in the CLT20 final by eight wickets.

Dwayne Smith and Suresh Raina scored more than 500 runs to help their team reach the final three of the competition. Brendon McCullum also collected 405 runs for Chennai.

Mohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin were the major contributors in the bowling department as they got 23, 19 and 16 wickets respectively.

2015 Season:

In the 2015, Chennai decided to get back the services of their talisman batsman Michael Hussey for INR 1.5 Crores. Chennai Super Kings finished the points table at the summit point as they won nine matches out of the 14. CSK lost in the first qualifier against Mumbai Indians by 25 runs. However, they went on to win the triller against Royal Challengers Bangalore by three wickets in the second qualifier.

Although, the Chennai side once again could not crack the code to beat Mumbai Indians in the final of the tournament. Mumbai won by a huge margin of 41 runs to claim their second IPL title.

Brendon McCullum, Faf du Plessis, Dwayne Smith, Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni all scored more than 350 runs for the Chennai side. Dwayne Bravo was once again able to bag the Purple cap as he took 26 wickets in 17 matches whereas Ashish Nehra took 22 wickets in 16 matches.

2016 and 2017: Suspended due to spot-fixing.

2018 season:

It was an emphatic return after spending two years on the sidelines. In fact, the people turn around in thousand just to catch CSK players in practice at their home ground of Chepauk stadium. Chennai decided to retain their skipper MS Dhoni, vice-captain Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja.

Furthermore, Chennai got back the services of Dwayne Bravo and Faf du Plessis through Right to Match card. Chennai Super Kings made an ecstatic return as they won against Mumbai Indians by just one wicket. Dwayne Bravo and Kedar Jadhav were able to take them through to the finishing line.

Similarly, Chennai was able to win another nail-biter against Kolkata Knight Riders as they received a brisk knock of a fifty from Sam Billings.

Chennai finished at the second place in the points table after the conclusion of the group stages. MS Dhoni-led side won nine matches to take their second place. Subsequently, they defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad, who had topped the points table, in the first qualifier by two wickets. CSK once again locked horns with the Orange army in the final of the competition.

In fact, CSK had no issues to defeat SRH for the fourth time in the season after beating them by eight wickets and nine balls to spare. Shane Watson showed his experience worth as he scored a magnificent hundred. The right-hander scored 117 off just 57 balls to take Chennai to their third IPL title. Additionally, this was Watson's second hundred of the season and it could not have come at a better time than the finals. Therefore, Shane Watson was awarded the Man of the match.

Ambati Rayudu and Shane Watson were instrumental in the success of their team as they 602 and 555 runs respectively. Furthermore, MS Dhoni batted at the top of his game as he scored 455 runs with the highest average of 75.83. Dhoni's deputy Suresh Raina also scored 445 runs in the IPL 2018. Shardul Thakur and Dwayne Bravo scalped 16 and 14 wickets respectively.

In fact, no one was banking on CSK after they had picked an experienced side. However, MS Dhoni's experienced army showed why experience cannot be bought in the market. Thus, it was a white-knuckle comeback from the most loved franchise in the Indian Premier League.

CSK Skipper MS Dhoni Lands In Chennai Before Indian Players’ Departure On August 13

CSK (Chennai Super Kings) skipper MS Dhoni landed in Chennai on Tuesday ahead of the departure of a group of players to the UAE, which will host the remainder of the Indian Premier League next month. A bunch of Indian players will travel to the UAE most likely on August 13, a top CSK official said.

With just a few weeks left for the IPL 2021 Phase 2, BCCI has given permission to the franchises to start heading to UAE after August 10. The MS Dhoni-led CSK franchise is looking to head over to Dubai next weekend. CSK has confirmed that the players and support staff will leave for Dubai on August 13. The CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has said that the team is looking to arrive in Dubai on August 14 or 15.

CSK Skipper MS Dhoni Lands In Chennai

It is notable that Chennai Super Kings usually starts practice a month or at least 15 days earlier as several players from the franchise are retired while some of them are yet to play in the international arena. Thus, the training helps them get in the groove and ensure they are on top of the opposition from the onset. They had previously started training in Chennai for a month ahead of the IPL 2021. The results showed for it as they won 5 out of 7 matches in the opening leg.

“Indian players in the team, whoever is available, will travel to UAE on August 13 in all likelihood,” CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan told PTI.

Fans celebrated MS Dhoni’s arrival in Chennai on social media.

“Lion Day Entry,” CSK posted with a photo of Dhoni on its Twitter handle about the captain reaching the city. There will be no camp in Chennai before the CSK players fly out to the UAE, Viswanathan said.

The second half of the IPL 2021 will be held in UAE from September 19 after the tournament was postponed due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in its bubble.

The BCCI then decided to conduct the remaining matches in the UAE, which successfully hosted IPL 2020. CSK resumes its IPL campaign on September 19 with a match against Mumbai Indians. The MS Dhoni-led side was in the second spot with 10 points after seven games before the league was postponed due to a bio bubble breach.

CSK’s Three Key Foreign Players Are Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, And Faf du Plessis

The England all-rounder Moeen Ali was the star performer for the side during the first half of IPL 2021 and something similar is expected from him in the UAE leg too. CSK’s new No.3, Moeen Ali slammed 206 runs in six innings at an average of 34.33 and a strike rate of 157.25. He also picked up five wickets and turned a couple of games on his own.

Sam Curran is a key all-rounder for the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings. The English all-rounder had a wonderful outing in the IPL 2020 edition and was one of the few positives for the side which had a forgettable campaign. In IPL 2020, Sam Curran scored 186 runs and also picked up 13 wickets in 14 innings.

Chennai Super Kings batting mainstay Faf du Plessis is the third leading run-getter in the IPL 2021 phase 1. The former South Africa skipper has amassed 320 runs in 7 innings at an average of 64.00, including 4 fifties. He is a vital cog in the batting lineup for CSK.

The platform laid by Faf du Plessis and opener Ruturaj Gaikwad (196 runs at a strike rate of 128.94) eased the pressure on the middle order and went a long way enabling CSK to put up massive totals. Ambati Rayudu-136 runs, Ravindra Jadeja-131 runs, Suresh Raina-123 runs also were among runs.

IPL 2021: MS Dhoni Asked Ruturaj Gaikwad A Simple Question To Assess His Mentality

MS Dhoni revealed on Wednesday that he had asked Ruturaj Gaikwad a simple question to assess his mentality in the lead-up to their game against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Mumbai.

Chennai Super Kings are known to back their players. At CSK, most players are assured of a long rope that helps them hit peak form. On Wednesday, CSK reaped the rewards for showing faith in young opener Ruturaj Gaikwad who did not have the ideal start to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 season.

MS Dhoni Asked Ruturaj Gaikwad How He Was Feeling

Ruturaj Gaikwad was retained by CSK for IPL 2021 after the young Maharashtra opener hit as many as 3 fifties towards the end of their floundering campaign in the UAE last year.  As expected, Ruturaj Gaikwad partnered with Faf du Plessis in the new season but the opener got scores of 5, 5, and 10 as he struggled to get going.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, who amassed 204 runs at 51 in IPL 2020, has managed just 20 runs from his three outings this season. Ruturaj Gaikwad smashed a hat-trick of half-centuries in the last three games to amass 204 runs averaging 51 in 6 games after scoring 5 runs in the first 3 outings in IPL 2020 held at UAE.

Ruturaj Gaikwad was backed for CSK’s 4th match of IPL 2021, the evening match in a double-header, against KKR on Wednesday. The young opener returned to peak form, showcasing his class and elegance.

Ruturaj Gaikwad hit 64 off 42 balls as he took the attack to KKR new-ball bowlers. He stitched a 115-run opening stand with South African opener Faf du Plessis, who went on to hit an unbeaten 95, as CSK posted a match-winning total of 220. Speaking after CSK’s win, MS Dhoni said he just posed a simple question to Ruturaj Gaikwad to assess his mentality ahead of their match against KKR in Mumbai.

“Rutu showed his class in the last IPL. You always need to assess where he is mentally. Once when he was off guard, I asked him ‘how are you feeling today?’. When you ask a question like that, you wait for the reactions, you see what’s in his eyes,” MS Dhoni said.

“There was enough in his reactions to suggest he wasn’t rattled. That’s what I’ve been doing all my life (applying a bit of psychology) but in a good way,” MS Dhoni added.

After losing their first game to Delhi Capitals, CSK came back strongly to register successive big wins against Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals before the thrilling win against Kolkata Knight Riders.

MS Dhoni’s CSK Beats KKR In A Thriller As Late Assault Goes In Vain

MS Dhoni marshalled his troops well as pacer Deepak Chahar broke the back of KKR’s top-order with 4 wickets in his 4 over-spell. KKR were reeling at 31/5 but a late assault from Andre Russell, Dinesh Karthik, and Pat Cummins helped the 2-time champions get close to the total.

Despite the scare, CSK went on to win their match by 18 runs and jump to the top of the table with 3 wins from 4 matches in IPL 2021.

Chennai Super Kings’ big total set up by a century-stand between openers Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad. CSK’s much-maligned opener come back to form spectacularly while the other opener powered to 95 not out. CSK had a total of 220 for 3, and then they had the opposition 31 for 5 inside the powerplay.

Andre Russell hit a 21-ball fifty, coming in at five down in 5.2 overs. Pat Cummins walked in when Andre Russell was out, saw Dinesh Karthik fall too, and then reeled off a 23-ball fifty.

But in the end, the Chennai Super Kings had put up too many runs and taken too many wickets upfront, as a valiant chase ended with the Kolkata Knight Riders 202 all out in 19.1 overs. Pat Cummins was unconquered on 66 and the last two wickets were run-outs with Pat Cummins trying to retain strike.

Chennai Super Kings 220 for 3 (du Plessis 95, Gaikwad 64) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 202 (Cummins 66*, Russell 54, Chahar 4-29, Ngidi 3-28) by 18 runs.

Notably, the Chennai Super Kings captain is in Mumbai leading the 3-time champions in the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League. MS Dhoni is due to lead CSK in their 4th match of IPL 2021 on Wednesday against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium.

MS Dhoni has led CSK in the IPL since the league’s inception and has won three IPL titles with the team in 2010, 2011, and 2018. CSK had a mixed start to this season of the league as they have won two and lost one out of their three matches. The team is in the third position on the points table with four points.

The veteran CSK skipper, one of the most successful captains in IPL history, recently played his 200th IPL match for CSK. He has 4650 runs for CSK from 207 matches with 23 fifties and a strike rate of 136.52.

MS Dhoni Had Spent Time With Family After IPL 2020

MS Dhoni had spent time with family after IPL 2020 in the UAE as he did not feature in any competitive matches before the ongoing season of IPL. He joined Chennai Super Kings as early as March as he oversaw and led a training camp with domestic players in Chennai. He and his CSK teammates then headed to Mumbai where they spent 7 days in mandatory quarantine before beginning training for IPL 2021.

Notably, all 8 IPL franchises are in strict bio-bubble environments across the country even as the Covid-19 cases are surging at an unprecedented pace in the second wave. In the past 24 hours, India has seen over 2.95 lakh fresh Covid-19 cases, pushing the caseload in India to over 1.56 crore.

MS Dhoni has led Chennai Super Kings to 2 wins out of 3 matches in the IPL. Despite not being in the best of forms with the bat, he has been ticking all the right boxes with his captaincy on the field. Against Rajasthan Royals on Monday, he hit only 18 from 17 balls but his captaincy changes by bringing spinners Moeen Ali and Ravindra Jadeja in the right situations were praised as CSK successfully defended 188 and sealed a 45-run win.

IPL 2021: MS Dhoni Can Afford Rest As CSK Team Has Batting Depth, Says Brian Lara

Brian Lara, a former West Indies batsman asserted that MS Dhoni should ‘take some rest’ as the team’s batting order is long enough and players like Sam Curran are in form. MS Dhoni scored 17-ball 18 on Monday. The former captain added that 3-time champions CSK should not be expecting too much from MS Dhoni with the bat.

Notably, none of the CSK batsmen could hit even a half-century in the match but the team managed to pile up 188 runs on the board against RR.

Brian Lara: MS Dhoni Can Take Some Rest To Be Back In Form

MS Dhoni came ahead of Sam Curran at the 7th position in the match and scored 18 off 17 balls. Dwayne Bravo and Shardul Thakur were the team’s 9th and 10th batsman respectively.

“I don’t think there should be asking for too much effort from MS Dhoni with the bat. Of course, he got the gloves in his hands, he has got to take the catches and do the stumpings. But I find that the batting order is so long, Dhoni can take some rest.

“We want him in form, we know how destructive he can be but he has got so many good players. Look at Sam Curran, who is in great form. He comes in and hits from ball one straightaway,” Brian Lara told Star Sports.

MS Dhoni has played two innings in the ongoing IPL 2021, batting at no. 7 both times. MS Dhoni though earlier said that he preferred to bat higher up the order to give himself more time to settle in. He played two rusty knocks from the no. 7 spots.

The first, a 2-ball duck, came against Delhi Capitals in CSK’s tournament opener. He then batted at the same position against Rajasthan Royals on Monday, scoring a 17-ball 18, which included two boundaries.

Brian Lara: CSK Have Got A Very Good Team, Can Win 4th IPL Trophy

Further, Brian Lara reckoned that CSK can successfully grab their 4th title if MS Dhoni concentrates on bringing the best out of all his players.

“I think they have got a very good team. A good leader who is inspirational. If he concentrates on that aspect of it, getting every single individual performing, they can go all the way,” Brian Lara stated.

Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets and grabbed four catches as he put up an amazing all-round show to help CSK earn their second win of IPL 2021 and keep their ships steady with back-to-back victories.  With 2 wins from 3 matches, CSK is currently placed second on the points table behind RCB.

Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali rocked the Rajasthan Royals (RR)  batting line-up with five wickets in less than four overs as they dismissed the likes of David Miller, Jos Buttler, Riyan Parag, Shivam Dube, and Chris Morris to jolt the RR run-chase to win by 45 runs.

MOM Moeen Ali starred with the ball having figures of 3/7 while Ravindra Jadeja grabbed 4 catches, adding to his two crucial breakthroughs that powered CSK to a comprehensive win over RR.

Brief Scores: Chennai Super Kings 188/9 (Faf du Plessis 33, Ambati Rayudu 27; Chetan Sakariya 3/36) beat Rajasthan Royals 143/9 (Jos Buttler 49, Jaydev Unadkat 24; Moeen Ali 3/7) by 45 runs.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had a forgettable campaign in IPL 2020, as the franchise finished 7th in the points table and didn’t qualify for the first time for playoffs in IPL history.

MS Dhoni himself who continued to play for CSK after international retirement on August 15, 2020, scored exactly 200 runs in 14 matches at a below-par average of 25 in IPL 2020. It will be interesting to see where the legendary wicketkeeper-batsman plays in CSK’s next game against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on April 15.

CSK Will Back Ruturaj Gaikwad Despite Scoring 20 Runs In 3 IPL Games, Says Stephen Fleming

Stephen Fleming, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) coach backed opener Ruturaj Gaikwad despite the latter’s poor form in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. The former New Zealand captain cited the 24-year-old batsman’s form in IPL 2020 as a reason for pursuing him.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, who amassed 204 runs at 51 in IPL 2020, has managed just 20 runs from his three outings this season. With a seasoned campaigner like Robin Uthappa waiting in the wings, experts in the cricket fraternity are already predicting a change at the CSK’s top-order, unlike CSK coach Stephen Fleming who wants to give him another chance to find lost form.

Stephen Fleming: CSK Will Continue To Back Ruturaj Gaikwad Despite Failure In First 3 IPL Games

However, coach Stephen Fleming clarified that according to the CSK philosophy, every player gets adequate opportunities before a decision is taken.

“Ya, Robin Uthappa is waiting. But Ruturaj Gaikwad earned a bit of time with the way he played last season. You know our philosophy. We give players a good amount of chances in what they are trying to do.

“We will continue to back him. Then see and make a decision soon. At the moment, we are backing a good young player,” said Stephen Fleming at the post-match presentation after CSK’s 45-run win over Rajasthan Royals at Mumbai on Monday.

Ruturaj Gaikwad had also registered three low scores in his first three matches of IPL 2020 before he was dropped from the XI. He came back strongly towards the end of the tournament, registering three consecutive half-centuries.
Ruturaj Gaikwad smashed a hat-trick of half-centuries in the last three games to amass 204 runs averaging 51 in 6 games after scoring 5 runs in the first 3 outings.
Coach Stephen Fleming also praised Moeen Ali for the way he has rejuvenated the side’s batting. The Englishman also took 3/7 to wreak havoc on the opposition.

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s Recent Form Not Convincing Enough

Ruturaj Gaikwad became a household name after a couple of brilliance for CSK in IPL 2020. Contracting COVID-19 after the side landed in UAE, the young player recovered and made a mark for himself after initial failures.

However, post-IPL 2021, his form hasn’t been something to talk about. He scored only 94 runs for Maharashtra in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2021 at 18.8, striking at 116. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy last month, he got a hundred but failed to get big scores in the rest of four innings. He finished the tournament with 182 runs at 36.4.

Robin Uthappa
Robin Uthappa

In contrast, Robin Uthappa scored 377 runs at 75.4 and at a strike rate of almost 132 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He even had a decent outing for Kerala in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20, where he got 161 runs at 32.2, striking at 140. With form on Robin Uthappa’s side, Ruturaj Gaikwad will need to step up soon and replicate his show from 2020.

Robin Uthappa’s recent returns have instilled his confidence ahead of his stint with his sixth IPL franchise. His runs for Kerala have come as an opener and his success in the IPL too – most notably for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) – came when he was batting at the top of the order.

Robin Uthappa has also featured in 46 ODIs and 13 T20Is for India and managed 7 fifties combined. In IPL though, he has played as many as 189 matches amassing 4607 runs averaging nearly 28. His last appearance for India was in 2015 against Zimbabwe and he has played consistently across all the years of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

After losing their first game to Delhi Capitals, CSK came back strongly to register successive big wins against Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) strengthened their position at the second spot in IPL 2021 points table with a resounding victory over Rajasthan Royals (RR).

CSK beat RR by 45 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. RR slid down to the sixth spot on the table with just one win in three matches.

IPL 2021: MS Dhoni Looking To Play The Role Of A Mentor More Than His Batting, Says Ajit Agarkar

Ajit Agarkar believes that MS Dhoni is looking to play the role of a ‘mentor’ and wicketkeeper-captain instead of as a match-winning batsman for Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

MS Dhoni has played two innings in the ongoing IPL 2021, batting at no. 7 both times. This is contrary to his assertion last season when MS Dhoni said that he preferred to bat higher up the order to give himself more time to settle in.

Ajit Agarkar: MS Dhoni Batting At No. 7 Is Strange

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Ajit Agarkar said that although it’s still early days in the ongoing tournament, MS Dhoni’s batting position is a ‘bit strange’ given how well he has performed higher up the order.

“Maybe that’s the way he looks at his role: captaining the team, being the mentor and wicketkeeper, more than batting. It’s still early in the tournament; we will know for sure in the next two or three games.

“But for MS Dhoni walking out to bat at no. 7 when the situation is almost tailor-made, and he has done it so many times over his career was a bit strange for me,” said Ajit Agarkar.

The former pacer Ajit Agarkar explained that MS Dhoni has lacked game time between seasons as he isn’t playing competitive cricket other than IPL and perhaps that’s why he has shunted himself to the lower order.

“It’s so early in the tournament, he doesn’t have any cricket between IPLs, which makes it even harder as you age, and no matter what you see, the guys who are scoring runs in the IPL have come with some sort of form. There’s no substitute for playing competitive cricket. Maybe that’s the way he is looking at it (now),” added Ajit Agarkar.

Dale Steyn: MS Dhoni Still Form A Fear Factor In Opposition’s Mind

During the same interaction, former South African fast bowler veteran Dale Steyn suggested that MS Dhoni’s batting position is his own call to take. Dale Steyn remarked that, contrary to the general perception, the former Indian captain still carries a fear factor.

Dale Steyn

He added that irrespective of MS Dhoni’s age, recent form, or batting position, every opposition girds for him as seriously as ever.

“Only he knows how well he’s batting and how well he feels. I know certainly that if I was playing against MS Dhoni, then a night before I will still be sitting there taking it extremely seriously that ‘I am coming up against MS Dhoni tomorrow’. So from a fear factor, he still has a massive role to play.”

“And wherever he’s going to bat in that lineup, captains are going to arrange their bowlers to use against ‘the’ MS Dhoni. They know if he’s going to come in the last three overs, they will have to change their line-up and what not. So he still has that fear factor. But it’s really up to him how he wants to go about this season,” said Steyn.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had a forgettable campaign in IPL 2020, as the franchise finished 7th in the points table and didn’t qualify for the first time for playoffs in IPL history.  MS Dhoni himself who continued to play for CSK after retirement on August 15, 2020, scored exactly 200 runs in 14 matches at a below-par average of 25 in IPL 2020.

Stephen Fleming : MS Dhoni Is Heartbeat Of CSK

Stephen Fleming, Chennai Super Kings head coach on Friday said that skipper MS Dhoni is the heartbeat of the franchise after the wicketkeeper-batsman completed 200 games in yellow-jersey.

In MS Dhoni’s milestone match, CSK registered their first win of the season as they defeated Punjab Kings by six wickets in a low-scoring affair at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday.

Stephen Fleming: MS Dhoni Is Undoubtedly Heartbeat Of CSK

CSK’s MS Dhoni has played 206 IPL games so far. 176 of those performances have been for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL while the remaining 24 has been for CSK in the presently-defunct Champions League T20. He played for defunct Rising Pune Supergiants in 30 IPL games when CSK was banned in 2016 and 2017 for match-fixing.

“He has been absolutely the heartbeat of CSK, there’s no doubt about it. Whether it’s performances, guidance, or leadership… you run out of things to say about him. His longevity also has to be mentioned and appreciated… to play 200 games and still have a desire to do well and perform well is a testament to his attitude towards the game and the franchise. I think the franchise has grown and MS has grown with it, so it’s a very good relationship and great fun,” Fleming said at the post-match press conference.

Bowling first, CSK restricted Punjab to 106/8 in their allotted 20 overs after a top-notch effort by the bowling unit. Deepak Chahar returned with his career-best figures of 4-13 including a maiden over from his quota of four overs.

Stephen Fleming Praised Deepak Chahar And Backs Ruturaj Gaikwad

Stephen Fleming lauded the pacer and said his ability to swing the ball was excellent but his control and skillset are also very high.

“I’m really impressed with the way he bounced back after the first game. We felt within our group that the conditions transpired against us with a little bit of drizzle and the dew in the last match and we weren’t able to create any opportunities. So, the challenge was laid down to the bowling group on how they are going to operate a little bit better in today’s conditions,” Stephen Fleming said while replying to an ANI query.

“Winning the toss. I think it’s important to acknowledge. So, there was some assistance there. And without a doubt, when Deepak gets a little bit of swing and a little bit of movement, he’s one of the finest around. So, his ability to swing the ball was one but his control and also skillset are very high.”

“So, the key really is keeping them a little bit simple in his plans and just operating in and around the stumps because he’s so effective when he hits the ball swinging. Today was a great example of the skills he has. And as I say, great bounce back from probably a below-par performance in the first game,” he added.

Deepak Chahar, Twitter @BCCI

When asked about any changes in the top-order for the next game, the CSK coach said, “I am happy with the balance we have got in the team. Ruturaj (Gaikwad) is a fine player. He got a good ball in the first match and very difficult conditions today (Friday). It’s wasn’t a 220-run wicket today. It was much different. Ruturaj was a player we showed faith in last year, and his talent came through. Our philosophy when we pick players and put them in the team is to back them. This combination (Ruturaj-Faf du Plessis) is simply that,” Stephen Fleming concluded.

It was a superb comeback for the pacer Deepak Chahar who struggled for form and fitness last season after a bout of Covid-19. Deepak Chahar delivered 18 dots in his four overs on Friday, and his tally of 4 for 13 was his best in the IPL. CSK will next play against Rajasthan Royals here at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday.

Stephen Fleming : Deepak Chahar Is One Of The Best When There’s Swing

Stephen Fleming, Chennai Super Kings head coach has acknowledged that pacer Deepak Chahar is one of the best in the business when there is swing and movement.

Deepak Chahar proved his worth to CSK once again on Friday, claiming 4 for 13 as MS Dhoni’s men defeated the Punjab Kings (PBKS) by six wickets. After restricting PBKS to a mere 106 for 8, CSK chased down the target with 26 balls to spare.

Stephen Fleming Impressed With The Way Deepak Chahar Bounced Back After 1st Game

Speaking at a virtual press conference after CSK’s impressive win, Stephen Fleming hailed Deepak Chahar for his match-winning effort.

When asked to analyze the pacer’s performance, Stephen Fleming stated: “Really impressed with the way he bounced back after the first game. Without doubt, when Deepak gets a little bit of swing and a little bit of movement, he is one of the finest around. His ability to swing the ball is one. But his control and skill set is also very high. The key is keeping him simple in his plans and just operating in and around the stumps. He is very effective when the ball swings. Stephen Fleming also admitted that the toss was crucial, pointing out that conditions were not in CSK’s favor in the first game against the IPL 2020 runners-up Delhi Capitals (DC), which the team lost by seven wickets.

Stephen Fleming elaborated: “We felt within ourselves that the conditions transpired against us with the drizzle and the dew (in the first game). We weren’t able to create any opportunities. So the challenge was laid down to the bowlers’ group as to how they were going to operate in today’s conditions. Winning the toss was important. There was some assistance there.”

Their pacers stood up and restricted CSK to 188 which the top-order chased down with 8 balls to spare. Prithvi Shaw scored a fine 72 off only 38 balls while Shikhar Dhawan scored 85 off 54 balls. The duo stitched a 138-run first-wicket stand. Earlier, CSK was in a stage of bother as they were reduced to 7/2 but comeback man Suresh Raina who scored 54, and Moeen Ali who scored 36 before Sam Curran’s explosive 34 ensured CSK finish at 188/7.

Among one of Deepak Chahar’s four wickets was the big one of the dangerous Chris Gayle (10), who was caught off a knuckleball. Stephen Fleming responded when asked if there were any specific plans against Chris Gayle. He said that the players had worked out tactics based on the conditions.

Stephen Fleming explained: “The players have been through a number of fields for Chris (Gayle) because he is such a dangerous player. The key thing to acknowledge was how the wicket was going to play and also if you win the toss (what would you do). We felt in our first game here, the wicket was a little sticky and offered a little bit to the bowlers. When we found that it was the case today, we had a few more attacking options. The first effort was to get Chris out lbw with a swinging ball. The other plans worked from there. It’s really the players working out things based on the conditions and the wicket.”

After Deepak Chahar’s 4 for 13 restricted PBKS to 106 for 8 in 20 overs, CSK chased down the target with ease, courtesy of Moeen Ali (46) and Faf du Plessis’ (36 not out) knocks.

Deepak Chahar’s remarkable four-wicket haul helped CSK restrict PBKS to 106/8 before they chased down the target with more than four overs to spare. Deepak Chahar castled Mayank Agarwal’s stumps in the very first over. He was back to bowl the fifth over and there was no stopping the right-arm seamer who struck twice in an over.

First, he dismissed Chris Gayle with a beautiful knuckle delivery after Ravindra Jadeja took a brilliant diving catch and later got Nicholas Pooran for a duck, with a short ball that was hit straight to the outfielder at fine leg.

PBKS were struggling at 26-4 at the end of the powerplay. While the CSK seamers were bowling tight lengths from one end, the CSK skipper decided to finish Deepak Chahar’s quota as the bowler scalped his 4th wicket of the innings after Deepak Hooda chipped it into the hands of Faf du Plessis at mid-off.

Brief Scores: Chennai Super Kings 107/4 (Moeen Ali 46, Faf du Plessis 36*; Mohammad Shami 2/21) beat Punjab Kings 106/8 (Shahrukh Khan 47, Jhye Richardson 15; Deepak Chahar 4/13) by 6 wickets

Gautam Gambhir Wants CSK Skipper MS Dhoni To Bat At No. 4 Or 5

Gautam Gambhir, former Indian opener wants Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper, MS Dhoni, to lead from the front by batting at No. 4 or 5 in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021.

MS Dhoni was dismissed for a second-ball duck against DC in CSK’s opening game of IPL 2021. MS Dhoni-led CSK suffered a 7-wicket defeat against Delhi Capitals in IPL 2021. Batting at No. 7, MS Dhoni was dismissed for a second-ball duck by Avesh Khan.

Gautam Gambhir: MS Dhoni Should Batting Higher Up As A Leader Needs To Lead From The Front

MS Dhoni, one of the most consistent and dominating batsmen for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) over the years, endured his worst season with the willow in IPL 2020 – where he looked a pale shadow of his former self. One of those batsmen who make the most of the death overs, MS Dhoni failed to get going for the Yellow Army in the UAE – where he managed to score just 200 runs in 14 matches.

In CSK’s first match in IPL 2021, MS Dhoni once again found it difficult to get going and was clean bowled for a second-ball duck by Delhi pacer Avesh Khan. With too many batting options available for CSK, MS Dhoni came to bat at No. 7 in CSK’s last match.

Gautam Gambhir has shared his views on MS Dhoni’s batting position and wants him to bat higher for CSK.

“MS Dhoni should be batting higher, that’s what matters because ultimately people should start leading from the front. We keep mentioning this thing that a leader needs to lead from the front. You can’t be leading, when you’re batting at No.7,” Gautam Gambhir said on Star Sports’ show Cricket LIVE.

Delhi Capitals opener Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw toyed with CSK’s bowling attack in the match as the opening pair stitched a formidable 138-run stand for the first wicket in just 13.3 overs to lay the foundation of a win.

Gautam Gambhir: MS Dhoni Isn’t Batting Like He Did 4-5 Years Back

Highlighting CSK’s bowling woes, Gautam Gambhir also added that MS Dhoni is no more the player who would go on to play aggressive innings right from the first delivery as a result of which he needs to bat at No. 4 or 5 to lay the base of solid foundation or play as a finisher.

“Yes, there are issues in their bowling lineup. Plus, he is not the MS Dhoni, which he used to be probably four or five years back, where he could just come in and start taking on the bowlers from the word go. For me, I think he needs to bat at number four/ five. Nothing below that,” Gambhir added.

CSK is set to lock horns with KL Rahul-led Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Friday. MS Dhoni, one of the most consistent and dominating batsmen for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) over the years, endured his worst season with the willow in IPL 2020 – where he looked a pale shadow of his former self.

One of those batsmen who made the most of the death overs, MS Dhoni failed to get going for the Yellow Army in the UAE – where he managed to score just 200 runs in 14 matches. With Lungi Ngidi and Jason Behrendorff still unavailable for selection, the challenge for MS Dhoni’s men would be to restrict Punjab’s star-studded batting line-up for a low total.

Unlike MS Dhoni, PBKS skipper KL Rahul is high on confidence for winning against RR and batting well scoring 91 valuable runs besides being Orange Cap winner in IPL 2020.

Punjab Kings (Probable XI): KL Rahul (c/wk), Mayank Agarwal, Chris Gayle, Deepak Hooda, Nicholas Pooran, Shahrukh Khan, Jhye Richardson, Murugan Ashwin, Riley Meredith, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh.

Chennai Super Kings (Probable XI): Ruturaj Gaikwad/Robin Uthappa, Faf du Plessis, Moeen Ali, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni (c/wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran, Dwayne Bravo/ Lungi Ngidi, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar.
