The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) post has been vacant in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for about six months. The board seems to be not interested in recruiting anyone for this post amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Santosh Rangnekar was the first and last BCCI’s CFO. He served the job for three years and resigned from the post in November last year. Since then, the Indian board has not hired anyone for this job. Interestingly, a BCCI source well known to this development informed that the board is satisfied with the treasurer Arun Dhumal’s work, so they are not finding any need of CFO.
“The BCCI is unlikely to recruit a CFO any time soon. If you read the new constitution carefully, there is a mandatory provision for a Chief Executive Officer but there is no mention that you need to have a CFO,” a senior BCCI official privy to the development told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
Also, there are reports that the board is facing financial stress so they will not be looking to hire another high-salaried executive.
“The current treasurer Arun Dhumal is hands on and if he needs help, the CEO at times can double up and do the job of CFO if need be,” the source added.
Last year, BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal joined the office with Sourav Ganguly. He is the younger brother of Minister of State for Finance and former BCCI president Anurag Thakur. He was also the President of the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association.
Meanwhile, Dhumal had earlier informed that IPL could not be hosted amid the pandemic. As he said, the prime reason behind it is the travel restrictions. But for now, players can start training so as they are fit whenever they decide to stage the tournament.
