Recently, the English all-rounder Ben Stokes has been nominated for the prestigious New Zealander of the Year award. However, Stokes feels that he is not the right person to be nominated for this award. He has also revealed the name who deserves this award.
New Zealand’s city Christchurch-born Ben Stokes recently played a massive role for England to win their maiden Cricket World Cup trophy. While England won the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, the left-handed batsman scored 465 runs in ten innings with an average of 66.42. Also, the right-arm pacer took seven wickets in that tournament. Most importantly, he won the Player of the Match award in the final of 2019 CWC.
The hosts England met with New Zealand in the final of 2019 CWC. In the crucial chasing moment of that match, when England were struggling, Stokes scored 84* and managed to tie that game. Later, he scored 8* in the Super Over which also had a tie result. Finally, England won that match on the boundary countback rule.
Later, Stokes’ name entered the nomination for the upcoming New Zealander of the Year award.
Stokes reveals why he is not the right person for this award
Ben Stokes feels flattered on this nomination. However, he thinks that he is not the right person to win this trophy as he helped England to win this trophy.
Stokes’ management firm has recently released a statement where the all-rounder claimed, “I am flattered to be nominated for New Zealander of the Year. I am proud of my New Zealand and Maori heritage but it would not sit right with me to be nominated for this prestigious award. There are people who deserve this recognition more and have done a lot more for the country of New Zealand.
“I have helped England lift a World Cup and my life is firmly established in the UK – it has been since I was 12-years old.”
Ben Stokes believes Kane Williamson should achieve this award
Ben Stokes feels that the New Zealand captain Kane Williamson is the right member to win this award. Stokes called Williamson a “Kiwi legend”.
The English all-rounder said, “I feel the whole country should align their support to New Zealand captain Kane Williamson. He should be revered as a Kiwi legend.”
For his impressive batting and captaincy, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the Player of the Tournament trophy in 2019 CWC. The right-handed batsman Williamson scored 578 runs in nine innings with an average of 82.57.
Stokes praised Williamson’s leadership quality and his kindness character.
The all-rounder added, “He led his team in this World Cup with distinction and honour. He was the player of the tournament and an inspirational leader of men. Williamson shows humility and empathy to every situation and is an all-round good bloke. He typifies what it is to be a New Zealander.
Stokes further added, “He would be a worthy recipient of this accolade. New Zealand, fully support him. He deserves it and gets my vote.”
Kane Williamson’s 578 runs in 2019 CWC is the most runs for a captain in a CWC season.
