Former English left-arm spinner and the present Director of Cricket of England cricket team, Ashley Giles has recently revealed that Ben Stokes was very desperate to return to the vice-captaincy role for England cricket team.

The talented all-rounder Ben Stokes entered the huge controversy after his brawl incident outside a Bristol Club in September 2017. Apart from missing many international matches due to that reason, Stokes was also removed of the vice-captaincy role.

However, since his return to the national team, Stokes has gradually improved his performances. The 28-year-old all-rounder played a massive role for England to win the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.

Due to his recent impressive performances, Ben Stokes has returned to the Test vice-captaincy from the beginning of Ashes 2019. The all-rounder has continued his brilliant form in the ongoing Ashes series.

Talking about the changing situation of Ben Stokes, Giles said, “It is [an incredible turnaround]. This is one of the responses that we want to see, really.

He further added in the BBC’s Sportsweek radio programme, “It was actually Ben Stokes who was badgering away as well about having the vice captaincy back, because this means so much to him. Not just the vice captaincy, but the Ashes series, Test cricket and he believes that as Joe [Root’s] right hand man he can deliver for him and he is demonstrating that pretty well at the moment.

“He was desperate to do it. He really is one of your warriors when you take to the field. And he has demonstrated that a couple of times this year at least, and on two of the biggest stages in the World Cup final, and last week in the Test match. He is almost, when you write the team down, he is going to be your first name on the list.”

Ben Stokes massively helped England to find back the morale

Ben Stokes was the hero of the England cricket team in the last week as his incredible batting has brought back England in the Ashes 2019. England was on the verge of defeat against Australia in the third Test of Ashes 2019 at Leeds.

Chasing down the whopping 359 runs target in the fourth innings, England were battling on 286/9. However, Stokes didn’t give up in that situation. He finally remained not out on 135 runs while England won that thrilling game by one wicket. It was England’s highest fourth-innings chase in Test cricket history.

Before that Test series, England were 1-0 behind in this series after the second Test. While England’s defeat in the Leeds Test would finish their dream to win the Ashes 2019, Stokes’ bat denied that. After the Leeds Test, the series is standing by 1-1 with two Tests to go.

Giles claimed, “Morale-wise, being back in the series, that’s how fine the lines are. We could [have been] looking at some very different interviews [last] Monday and Tuesday.

“We are very much back in the Ashes series now and I’m sure that the guys will be full of confidence. And just that performance that Ben Stokes delivered. I’m sure it will raise everyone else as well.”

Ben Stokes also scored a century in the second Test of Ashes 2019 at Lord’s (London). At the crucial moment of England’s second innings in that game, Stokes scored 115 not out. His batting once again helped England in that game as they were not far away from the victory. But ultimately, the visitors Australia saved that game.
