On Tuesday (24th March), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will reportedly meet with the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises to decide the fate of IPL 2020. As the current situation is not good enough in India or globally, the cancellation of the IPL 2020 is on the cards.
IPL 2020 will be the 13th edition of the cash-rich Indian Premier League. The tournament was initially scheduled from 29th March to 24th May in India. All the franchises have almost sorted out their entire team, including the players and support staff for the upcoming edition. They were just waiting to start the practice session ahead of the beginning of the tournament.
However, the novel COVID-19 or coronavirus outbreak has changed every situation in the world. While more than 340,000 people have been affected due to this virus, more than 14,000 people have lost their lives. The daily situation is moving towards more dangerous as the medical system is hugely struggling to fight against this virus.
The daily routine has almost been stopped in the majorly affected countries as many countries are going through the lockdown process to fight against this virus.
In India, more than 400 people have been affected in coronavirus while eight deaths have been reported in this process. The entire country is facing the lockdown till the end of this month.
Earlier, in the initial process, the Indian government suspended most of the visas till 15th April 2020 and also banned the public gatherings. Observing those initial processes, the BCCI initially decided to postpone the IPL 2020 till 15th April 2020.
Since the postponement of IPL 2020, the BCCI is continuously monitoring the entire situation in the country and the world. Initially, the board was gathering many ideas to prepare the IPL 2020 somehow successfully. But after observing the present situation, the future of IPL 2020 is under the dark cloud as no one is taking this tournament in their mind at present.
The BCCI officials are not even thinking about the IPL 2020 now
According to the InsideSport.co report, the BCCI and IPL franchises will meet on Tuesday via conference call. The fate of IPL 2020 is likely to be clarified in this meeting.
A source claimed according to that report, “The stakeholders will be informally apprised after the conference call with the franchisees tomorrow (Tuesday) even if a formal announcement is not made soon.
“They (the BCCI) officials are not even thinking about the IPL now. It will be insensitive to even think about the league in this situation when the Coronavirus infection and death toll is rising by the minute.
“Situation will become more clear after the board members discuss among themselves during the day and inform us.”
The source further added, “A scenario without the IPL will be the only item on agenda now. No one is going to talk about the possibility of the league now. Entire world is coming to a standstill.”
The report has also added that several freelance broadcast professionals have confirmed the no progress in IPL 2020.
If the BCCI cancels this tournament, it will be the first time since the inception of this tournament to see a cancellation of the IPL tournament.
