The ongoing series between South Africa and Australia has been one of the most controversy-laden series in the recent times. The latest ball-tampering scandal has got the entire cricketing world engulfed in it.
Acting on the issue, Australian captain Steven Smith has been handed a one-match ban by the International Cricket Council and a fine of 100 percent match fees. Cameron Bancroft on the other hand has been fined 75 percent of match fees.
While, the Australian media, fans, and the government feel that a one-match ban is not enough, the players from different countries feel that everybody tamper with the ball but very few get caught.
Australian cricketer Chris Lynn has tried to defend the national team captain Steven Smith by saying that every cricketer at some point has been engaged in ball tampering.
The right-handed batsman said:
“I reckon every cricketer’s probably done it throughout their career in grade cricket or whatever level. But obviously not to that extent. I think Faf du Plessis said when he got done he was more ball-shining than tampering. There’s a fine line between all that stuff.”
Lynn also added that Smith confessed his mistake and he will never repeat it. He said:
“I know he definitely won’t do it again. He’s conceded (to it) but obviously it’s not the Australian way. As a cricketer, it’s not great waking up to that news… (but) he hasn’t murdered anyone. The ICC have sanctioned the boys already and Cricket Australia (will) have their say.”
