The present Duckworth–Lewis–Stern method or DLS method was formerly known as the Duckworth–Lewis method or D/L method. It is a mathematical formulation that has been designed to calculate the target score for the team batting second in a limited-overs cricket match when weather or other circumstances interrupt the game and forced to reduce the number of overs.

Earlier, the method has been named according to the two English statisticians, Frank Duckworth and Tony Lewis, who introduced this system in 1997. Later, The International Cricket Council (ICC) officially adopted this method in 1999.

In 2014, Professor Steven Stern has taken the custody of this method after the retirements of Duckworth and Lewis, which forced to rename it as the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern method from Duckworth–Lewis method.
