CSA ropes in Khaya Zondo, Lungi Ngidi for ODI squad against India
With the six-match One-day International series bound to kick off on February 1 at Kingsmead in Durban against Virat Kohli-led India, Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced the squad on Thursday with the inclusion of the debutant Khaya Zondo in the squad for first three games.
However, Farhan Behardien was axed from the squad as the selectors showed 27-year-old left-arm unorthodox spinner Tabraiz Shamsi enough belief.
The Durban-born 27-year-old batsman Zondo is expected to don the maiden international cap at the home ground while facing the Men in Blue.
Moreover, Aiden Markram is expected to settle in the middle-order with Jean-Paul Duminy strengthening the side.
The pace will be relying on speedster Kagiso Rabada and imposing tall figure Morne Morkel while Andile Phehlukwayo will assist alongside bowling all-rounder Chris Morris.
Dolphins leader Zondo:
Pertinently, Zondo is the skipper of the domestic side Dolphins after enjoying the success in the domestic cricket would further be eyeing to make his place permanent in the national fold which would eventually be a difficult task.
Zondo‘s Recent form:
In the ongoing Momentum One-day Cup 2017-18, Zondo scored 217 runs in eight fixtures at an average of 36.16.
Who else is expected to make a debut in ODIs?
The Proteas rising star and 21-year-old fast bowler Lungi Ngidi, who has grabbed all the attention during the ongoing Sunfoil Test series for his brilliant display with the ball has also been roped in the 50-over format.
So far, Ngidi, who’s playing his third Test, has already featured in three Twenty20 Internationals after his international debut in January 2017 against Sri Lanka at Centurion.
Zondo with the Proteas team in India:
In 2015, Zondo was the part of five-match series in India, but he didn’t get a single game under the leadership of AB de Villiers when the visitors register 3-2 series win.
Controversial picking in Mumbai match:
However, during the then series the controversial decision of Zondo being sidelined when left-handed opening batsman Dean Elgar was called in to feature in the decider at the iconic Wankhade Stadium in Mumbai which irked the section of cricketers who further submitted a letter to the CSA in a bid to look into the matter.
