Emotional David Warner Takes Virat Kohli’s Name During Allan Border Medal Winning Speech

After one hard year, David Warner has finally returned to his familiar cricket form, and now he won his third Allan Border Medal – the most prestigious individual prize in Australian men’s cricket. During that award-winning moment, Warner took the name of Indian captain Virat Kohli.

In March 2018, Australian vice-captain David Warner was involved in the sandpaper-gate incident during Cape Town Test against the hosts South Africa. Apart from him, then captain Steven Smith and opener Cameron Bancroft were also involved in that incident.

Though they escaped from the big punishment of International Cricket Council (ICC), the Cricket Australia (CA) handed the one-year ban to Warner and Smith and nine-month ban to Bancroft.

David Warner makes a successful comeback

One year later, David Warner made a great comeback in the cricket world. First, he shined in the IPL 2019, as he won the Orange Cap after scoring 692 runs in that tournament. Then, he finished as the second most run-scorer (647 runs) in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 (one run behind from the highest run-scorer Rohit Sharma).

Though Warner massively failed in the Ashes 2019 as Stuart Broad made Warner his bunny, the Aussie star remarkably performed in the 2019/20 home summer. The left-handed batsman also hit his maiden triple-century in Test career. Despite missing out around the first five months of 2019 in international cricket, Warner still finished as the sixth most international run-scorer in that year and most run-scorer among the Australian cricketers in that year.

Due to his strong performances, David Warner won the Allan Border Medal 2020 which was his third Allan Border Medal (2016, 2017 and 2020). This time he beat Steven Smith for just one vote. After taking that medal, Warner was very emotional in his speech. During that speech, he added how his daughters yelled out the name of Virat Kohli.

Warner said, “I realised a lot of things during that time off that we don’t actually understand or realise when we’re in this bubble, the importance of what this game is and the smiles on the faces that we bring to a lot of people. Having three daughters at home, looking up to guys like ‘Smithy’, ‘Cummo’ — playing cricket in the backyard they’re yelling out Virat Kohli’s name — but these are the smiles on kids faces that we put on.”

David Warner also thanked many people, including his family. He especially took the name of his wife, Candice Warner.

On the other hand, Ellyse Perry won the Belinda Clark Medal 2020 (the most prestigious individual prize in Australian women’s cricket). In this edition, Marnus Labuschagne won the Men’s Test Player of the Year award, who was the most Test run-scorer in 2019.
