Devdutt Padikkal of Royal Challengers Bangalore has been paired with skipper Virat Kohli in RCB’s mentorship program introduced by the management to groom the budding talent they have in their squad for IPL 2020.
As part of this unique team bonding initiative to nurture promising young talent, RCB pacer Navdeep Saini has been paired with South African pacer Dale Steyn. Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Director of Cricket, Mike Hesson revealed how this mentorship program came into force and the real purpose behind this move.
Devdutt Padikkal has been incredible with the bat:
RCB’s mentorship program will see a young and an experienced player being paired with as per skillset like pacer Navdeep Saini being paired with Dale Steyn whereas talented batsman Devdutt Padikkal being paired with India and RCB skipper Virat Kohli.
“The mentorship programme is something Simon Katich (head coach) was very keen to introduce, it’s something that happens in many sports, and its something that can take place when players are keen to share their experiences.”
“The players can exchange ideas with each other, we spent a lot of time to pick who will spend with whom, generally we have done it around the skill group. Players will be able to spend time with each other and be away from the practice. They can talk about the game, for example, Navdeep Saini is paired with Dale Steyn,” Hesson said in a video posted by RCB’s official Twitter handle.
“Steyn has done the job all around the world, he knows the game inside out, Saini is hugely talented, he wants to bowl fast and there was none better than Steyn to pair him with.”
“Devdutt Padikkal is paired with Virat Kohli, there is none better mentor for a young kid, they both have a real passion to succeed. We have asked the peers (experienced cricketers) to introduce their buddy (youngsters) to the rest of the group,” Hesson added.
The Royal Challengers Bangalore have made a bright start to IPL 2020 as they have registered two wins out of three matches and are currently at fourth position in the points table. RCB will next take on Rajasthan Royals at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, October 3.
