Sri Lanka is dealt a huge blow before beginning of the 3-match Test series in the England tour as Dhammika Prasad is ruled out from the opening match of the Test series.

Prasad has suffered a shoulder injury in the first tour match against Essex in last week. Though in that time the injury was described as nothing more than a “niggle”, Sri Lankan coach Graham Ford now admitted that the injury was more serious than initially thought.

Ford said, “He’s not available for the first Test and it’s an ongoing assessment, on a daily basis. I am hoping that we can get him bowling again fairly soon. Then we’ll have to build him up and get quite a number of overs bowled in the nets in order to prepare him for potentially the second and third Test.”

Currently, Dhammika Prasad is one of important Sri Lankan pacers, specially in Test. But during his international career, Prasad had suffered injury problems several times in the past. The 32-years old right-handed pacer has only played 25 Tests, 24 ODIs and only T20I after making international debut in 2006.

In the tour matches in ongoing England tour, Sri Lankan top order performed quite disappointingly, except the last innings in the tour match against Leicestershire where opener Dimuth Karunaratne hit a century. Along with that, another opener Kaushal Silva (43 runs) and no.3 batsman Lahiru Thirimanne (40* runs) both reached 40 runs in that last innings against Leicestershire.

Ford told BBC sport about his team, “As we have gone along players have started to find their feet and find a bit of form. Every day, there is someone new who is starting to look like he feeling a bit more settled in English conditions.

“Hopefully with a bit more work the boys will have some good belief about what they can do. It is going to be about mental toughness and handling pressure when the Test starts on Thursday.

“Over the next day or two we’ll decide the team but most of the places are starting to sort themselves out.”

The first Test of 3-match Test series between England and Sri Lanka will be played from 19th May at Headingley.
