Dinesh Chandimal will take over the reigns from Angelo Mathews as the ODI skipper of the Sri Lanka Cricket team following their disastrous run in the Asia Cup.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka went out of the six-nation tournaments following their defeats against Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Furthermore, this is the second time this year that Mathews has had to relinquish captaincy for Chandimal.

Previously, in January, the selectors handed Angelo Mathews as the full-time ODI and T20I captain of Sri Lanka. However, less than two weeks since taking over, an injury had forced him out of the team leaving Dinesh Chandimal the duties of leading the side.

In July, Mathews having recovered from injury took charge again against South Africa. However, lost the ODI series at home and won the lone T20I before heading out for the Asia Cup.

The latest change though has been enforced by the selectors who have “requested Angelo Mathews to relinquish his duties as the National ODI & T20I captain, with immediate effect,” according to a media release.
Dinesh Chandimal’s first assignment will be the limited overs series against England at home. It will be a tough challenge for his side which begins on October 10, 2018. England will play a five-match ODI series followed by a single T20I and three Test matches.
