On Friday (13th December), England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced the 16-member ODI and T20I squads for the upcoming England tour of South Africa. Four uncapped ODI cricketers have earned the ODI call-ups for the first time.
After the conclusion of the forthcoming four-match Test series in the South Africa tour, England will also play the limited-overs international series in the same tour. The three-match ODI series will run from 4th to 9th February 2020. Before the ODI series, England will play two 50-over tour games against Cricket South Africa Invitation XI. England will end the South Africa tour with the three-match T20I series which will be played between 12th and 16th February 2020.
The board has maintained eight World Cup-winning players in the ODI squad
The South Africa-England ODI series will be the first ODI cricket assignment for both England and South Africa since their conclusion of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Eoin Morgan will continue to lead the English team in limited-overs cricket. A total of eight English players from the CWC 2019-winning squad have been named for the upcoming ODI series.
Pat Brown, Tom Banton, Matthew Parkinson and Saqib Mahmood have been named for the first time in ODI squads. However, all of them have already made their T20I debuts for the England cricket team.
Jofra Archer, Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and Mark Wood are the players who have been rested from the ODI series but will be available for the T20I series.
Apart from maintaining his place in the ODI squad, Moeen Ali has made a return to the T20I side too, who last played a T20I on 27th October 2018 against Sri Lanka at Colombo (RPS).
Five players have been dropped from the last T20I squad in New Zealand tour
While in the last month England won the away T20I series against the hosts New Zealand (3-2 margin), five players have been dropped from the T20I squad for the upcoming tour against South Africa. These five players are Tom Banton, Sam Billings, Lewis Gregory, Saqib Mahmood and James Vince.
Joe Root has once again missed out the T20I squad. However, he has maintained his place in the ODI format.
