Sri Lanka Vs England 2020: Test Series – England Players Will Not Involve In Handshakes

The Coronavirus is seriously threatening the world right now. The global sports have also been affected hugely by this issue. While the England cricket team is travelling to Sri Lanka for the Test series, they have decided to not involve in the handshakes during this tour, rather than they will celebrate differently.

Like the other sports, cricket has also suffered due to the Coronavirus, but it hasn’t been affected in the major cricket matches yet. The Coronavirus has seriously affected in the 2020 Asia Cup Qualifiers as China, Bhutan and Myanmar withdrew their participation in these qualifiers.

On the other hand, England is touring in Sri Lanka for the two-match Test series, starting on 19th March. Ahead of this Test series, which is the part of the 2019-21 ICC World Test Championship, England will also play two multiple-day tour matches, starting on 7th March. The English players have just landed in this Asian country.

Though the Coronavirus hasn’t affected Sri Lanka yet, some England players recently experienced illness with flu-like symptoms during South Africa tour. So, England side has now come up with the solution to tackle this and finish this tour with positive and healthy. The England players will try to make minimum contact with each other without hampering their game.

Instead of shaking hands, England players will now involve in the fist bump. They are also trying to be clean as much as possible.

English Test captain Joe Root said according to au.sports yahoo.com, “After the illnesses that swept through the squad in South Africa, we are well aware of the importance of keeping contact to a minimum and we’ve been given some really sound and sensible advice from our medical team to help prevent spreading germs and bacteria.

“We are not shaking hands with each other, using instead the well-established fist bump, and we are washing hands regularly and wiping down surfaces using the anti-bacterial wipes and gels we’ve been given in our immunity packs.”

There is no suggestion that the tour will be affected: England Test captain

However, Joe Root believes that the Sri Lanka tour will run according to the plan as there is no negative suggestion about this tour yet.

He added, “There is no suggestion that the tour will be affected, but of course it is an evolving situation so we are in regular contact with the authorities and will proceed as advised, but at this stage we fully expect the tour to continue as planned.”

Last time, England toured in Sri Lanka in October-November 2018 where the visitors won the five-match ODI series by 3-1, only T20I and three-match Test series by 3-0. It was England’s first Test series win in Sri Lanka since 2001.
