England has strengthened their grip in the ongoing fifth and final Test match as they are leading 283 by runs. The hosts have eight wickets in hand and went through to Lunch without the loss of any wickets.

Meanwhile, the highlight of the first session was Alastair Cook who scored his 33rd Test century.  In fact, Cook didn’t get to his hundred in the ideal way as he would have imagined as he was gifted overthrows. Subsequently, the left-hander received a standing ovation from the whole Oval crowd. Thus, Cook became the sixth batsman to score a hundred on his debut as well as his last Test match.

In fact, veteran southpaw opener also leapfrogged Kumar Sangakkara as the fifth highest Test run-getter. Therefore, it has been a perfect farewell for the England vanguard batsman. Cook had also scored a fine 71 in the first innings.

On the other hand, England skipper Joe Root scored freely as he also got in close proximity to the three-digit mark. Root went to lunch while batting on unbeaten 92 runs where Cook is unconquered on 103 runs.

Consequently, England captain was able to get back into form as he looked out of touch after the first Test match. Hence, it is a positive sign for England. However, Root survived a close call when Ajinkya Rahane fluffed a tough chance in the first slip.

Root and Cook have already put an alliance of 183 runs and they are looking good for more.

Meanwhile, Ishant Sharma was missing from the field as Karun Nair took his place. Thus, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Shami had to do the bulk of fast bowling.

Brief Scores: England 243-2, leads by 283 runs.
