England Vs South Africa, 2017: Faf Du Plessis Urges Batsmen To Replicate Dean Elgar At Old Trafford

South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis has urged his teammates particularly batsmen to follow what opening batsman Dean Elgar did at the Kennington Oval in the third Test to give a hard fight against the hosts England.

“We will try to make sure that we can do exactly what he did in the last Test,” du Plessis was quoted as saying by AFP.

Du Plessis believes Elgar has set a prime example for the teammates — to lift the team as the unit has completely failed to impress in the third Test after handing a humiliating 340-run defeat to hosts England in the second Test at the Trent Bridge, last month.

“Hopefully the batters can respond well because he showed us how you need to bat in Test match cricket,” du Plessis added.

In the final Test of the Investec series, the middle-order batsman du Plessis has further wished to level the series on a high note, before leaving for home as the full-fledged bilateral series started in May which further saw visitors losing the One-day International series and Twenty20 Internationals respectively.

The Welkom-born 30-year-old left-handed batsman scored 136 off 248 balls to save the one end.

However, following the brilliance of off-spinner Moeen Ali, who bagged a hat-trick, helped England to clinch the game by 239 runs to lead the series 2-1.

The 33-year-old Pretoria-born Proteas captain wants to raise the bar of the game in a bid to give his best after failing to provide an early impetus for his team in the historic Test at the Kia Oval owing to be the hundredth Test as a venue for the London-based stadium.

In the first innings of third Test du Plessis could add a single, as he sent back to pavilion after being trapped in front of the stumps on the very first ball by promising prospect Ben Stokes during the second innings which saw the visitors posting 252 on board in 77.1 overs.

Interestingly, South Africa lost only Test series against India in the 2015-16 season, as ranked No. 2 side has claimed 13 in 19 after five were drawn.

As hosts and visitors would wrestle it out which could be a series decider, the Proteas have claimed their win at Old Trafford in 1955.

Du Plessis is averaging 43.25 in Tests after scoring 2,509 runs in 67 innings of 42 Tests, has further expected top-order batsmen to contribute before bowlers would be aiming to make things difficult for the Joe Root-led England.

The final Test will kick start in Manchester on Friday (August 4).
