Exactly a year ago, Eoin Morgan-led England cricket team won their first-ever ICC Cricket World Cup trophy. The English captain feels lucky to be retained as the skipper despite their early exit from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.
There were totally two different stories for England in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 and ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 editions. While Morgan led both those sides, England surprisingly failed to qualify for the knock-out stages in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 in Australia but won the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 at home.
Morgan feels that the most significant appointment after the CWC 2015 disaster was the appointment of the former English captain Andrew Strauss as the Director of Cricket. The present English limited-overs captain credited Strauss for bringing the significant change in the English team that helped them to win their maiden ICC ODI trophy.
Morgan recently said in ICC podcast titled ‘CWC Rewind’ with Ian Bishop and Nasser Hussain, “The most significant appointment following the 2015 World Cup was the appointment of Andrew Strauss as the Director of Cricket. He actually had seen first hand what had happened during the World Cup, he recognised the need for significant change within the group.”
Morgan felt lucky to be retained as the limited-overs captain despite their disastrous performances in the CWC 2015 edition. He then pointed out the inclusion of Trevor Bayliss as the Head Coach of the English team which helped him to change the mindset of the English players to prepare them strongly for the CWC 2019.
Morgan claimed, “For a guy to come in such a prominent role and to make changes in such a fast manner was very significant. I was kept on as skipper of the side and I do feel lucky to be retained as the skipper of the side, Trevor Bayliss was appointed as the coach and we started playing an aggressive brand of cricket and that was very exciting for all of us.”
Eoin Morgan on his relationship with Trevor Bayliss
Morgan claimed that his relationship with Bayliss was strong and that worked very well for the England team. Before his coaching term for England, Morgan experienced Bayliss’ coaching during his IPL tenure for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and it helped them to create a stronger relationship very quickly for the England cricket team.
The English captain added, “I thought the relationship with Bayliss worked really well before he was appointed as the coach of England, we had spent some time with Kolkata Knight Riders, building the relationship with him did not take long. Once we worked out what the goal was, it was about putting the strategy in place, Bayliss was ready to take the backseat.”
On 14th July 2019, in the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 at the Lord’s (London), England players fought bravely against New Zealand, and despite the tied results in both the main game and Super Over, England was declared as the winners of that match and tournament on the boundary countback rule.
