Eoin Morgan, Kolkata Knight Riders captain was elated after an exciting win for the team as the match saw Sunil Narine’s successful return after a long hiatus. KKR thrashed strong Delhi Capitals in Abu Dhabi on Saturday by 59 runs as Nitish Rana, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy were the standout performers.
Eoin Morgan credited head coach Brendon McCullum after KKR won and revealed that it was the coach who asked all-rounder Sunil Narine to bat ahead of his captain. The move paid off as KKR posted 194/6 after Nitish Rana who opened scored 81 and Sunil Narine scored 64. In reply, Delhi Capitals could only post 135/9.
Eoin Morgan: Decision To Bat Sunil Narine Was Coach’s Idea
Sunil Narine’s exciting fifty came off a batting-order change as the West Indies all-rounder was promoted ahead of Eoin Morgan. Sunil Narine walked in at No.5, after former skipper Dinesh Karthik’s dismissal, ahead of captain Eoin Morgan and he did not disappoint at all with the bat.
The duo of Sunil Narine and opener Nitish Rana added 115 runs off just 56 balls in their 4th wicket stand which was broken by pacer Kagiso Rabada. Eoin Morgan revealed that the change in the batting order was head coach Brendon McCullum’s idea who likes to play his cards by shuffling the batting order.
“We had had a nice couple of days to reflect on things. In such a compact tournament, it can be easy to get caught up. Great of Sunil to come back and play as a proper allrounder. And Nitish Rana and him adding all the runs. The decision to bat Narine there is all from the coach. He likes to play his cards. It is all Brendon,” Morgan said at the post-match presentation.
Kolkata Knight Riders’ exciting 59-run win against Delhi Capitals, in Abu Dhabi, came after the team posted a huge total of 194/6, largely due to contributions from opener Nitish Rana (81 off 53) and Sunil Narine (64 off 32) who performed excellently with the bat.
Eoin Morgan: Varun Chakraborty Has Been KKR’s Standout Performer
Chasing 195, Delhi Capitals were totally dismantled by mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who bagged his maiden 5-wicket haul (5/20) in T20 cricket. Apart from Shreyas Iyer’s 47, none of the other batsmen could score more than 27 runs in that second innings. Pat Cummins returned with 3/17 and Lockie Ferguson picked up the other 1 wicket in that second innings.
“Given the nature of the tournament, it is not a tournament where sides get 100 in top 10. You need a longer batting line-up than a strong one. That is why I am batting lower. Varun is such a humble guy. he just goes about his work. Throughout the tournament, he has been our standout performer.”
Man Of The Match-award winner Varun Chakravarthy returned with the figures of 5/20 which is the best bowling figures registered so far in IPL 2020. The win was a big relief for KKR as they scored only 84/8 in stipulated 20 overs against RCB, who won by 8 wickets in their previous match.
