On his ODI debut Badrinath, who replaced Sachin Tendulkar, led India to a win in a close game against Sri Lanka in 2008. In 2010, he made his Test debut after scoring truckloads of runs in the domestic circuit. He made a half-century on debut against the South African attack in Nagpur. He was man of the match on his T20 International debut against West Indies in 2011. Despite these promising performances, Badrinath managed to play only 7 ODIs, 2 Tests and one T20 International for India.

In 2014, Badrinath saw how life can be tough when no franchise picked him in the IPL auction. He was suffering of an injury also. He was Chennai Super Kings’ mainstay in the batting line-up for six seasons and hardly missed a match.
