Martin Guptill has been ruled out of the T20I series against Bangladesh due to a hamstring strain, which he suffered during the third ODI against Bangladesh, which the Kiwis won by eight wickets. In-form batsman Neil Broom, who scored a century in the second ODI followed by an innings of 97 in the final ODI, has been named as his replacement.
“Martin’s obviously a key player for us with the white ball, so to lose him is disappointing,” Hesson said. “We’re confident with some rest, followed by a couple of domestic games, he’ll be ready to play a big role against Australia at the end of January.
Broom has played a total of 10 T20Is with his last game coming in 2013 against Sri Lanka at Pallekele. He is all set to open the innings now in the first T20 to be played on January 3 2017, at Napier. Two more T20Is and two Tests will follow this game.
“We needed to replace an attacking opening batsman and with Neil’s experience opening in the T20 format and his current form, he was a ready-made replacement. Martin also leads our fielding in white-ball cricket and so we’re expecting Neil to be a big contributor in that area as well,” he concluded.
