Glenn McGrath Feels Australia Will Have Advantage Against India In Day-Night Test
Former Australian pacer Glenn McGrath is a big fan of the day-night pink-ball Test as he believes that the day-night Test has a future. However, he is not a fan of the four-day Test match.
Since the invention of the day-night Test cricket in 2015, it has grown up huge popularity. Recently, last November, India played its first day-night Test match, which was against Bangladesh and the hosts India won that by an innings and 46 runs. In the next tour of Australia in 2020/21, the Indian team will play one day-night Test match during the Test series.
While the Australian team is dominating in the day-night Test cricket, Glenn McGrath believes that India will face a tough challenge during the day-night Test match against the hosts Australia.
McGrath said according to Sportstar, “Obviously, there will be other challenges that the Indian team hasn’t come up against in day-night Test cricket. T20 is taking the world by storm, just that it’s bringing a lot more people to the game. We need to filter that in Test cricket and keep it alive.”
I’m very much a traditionalist: Glenn McGrath
Glenn McGrath has also revealed that he is the big fan of this new form of Test cricket, but not a big fan of the four-day Test cricket.
He added, “I am a big fan of day-night Test cricket. I’m not a big fan of four-day Test cricket. I’m very much a traditionalist. If we can bring something new that’s going to keep people coming to the game, then that’s brilliant and day-night Test cricket is that. When you bowl, you bat it can make a big difference. Different tactics, so it just brings a different awareness and different things you have to do.”
While no other team has played the day-night Test for more than four matches, Australia have played seven day-night pink-ball Test and won all those matches. Glenn McGrath also believes that Australia have a better understanding of this new form of Test cricket.
He said, “Australia has got a lot more experience. They have played a lot more day-night Test cricket now, they know how it works.”
Virat Kohli is a quality captain
Though Glenn McGrath has admitted that Australia have big advantages, he also believes that the Virat Kohli-led Indian team will not give the easy taste to the Australian team in this day-night Test cricket.
McGrath claimed, “Virat [Kohli] is a quality captain. They will be up for the challenge. I am not expecting them to give a walk-over. Australia has lot more advantage in day-night Tests. That will be in their favour and also, the home advantage.”
Apart from the new Test teams Ireland and Afghanistan, all other teams have already started to play the day-night pink-ball Test cricket. Glenn McGrath feels that the new format is the best way to move forward in this longer format.
He said, “I think that’s obviously the best way to move forward. The way to gain experience is by getting out there and playing it. We do need to keep Test cricket the ultimate. If you’re successful at Test level. Nine times out of 10, you will be successful at the shortest level as well. You’ll be pretty successful in the shorter version, get your name in the IPL contract.
“It all works hand-in-hand. I like the fact we’ve got three formats, and I think we need to do everything to keep them as healthy as possible.”
