Australian legendary fast bowler Glenn McGrath has backed his Ashes rival James Anderson to go for 600 Test wickets. England’s pack leader James Anderson went past McGrath tally of 563 wickets when he clean bowled Mohammad Shami. Subsequently, Anderson became the leading wicket-taker as a fast bowler in the red ball version. Thus, England was also able to seal the series by 4-1.

Meanwhile, Glenn McGrath also congratulated Anderson for going past him. McGrath scalped 563 wickets in 124 Test Matches whereas Anderson took 143 matches to leapfrog former Australian great.

On the other hand, James Anderson ended as the highest wicket-getter of the series against India with 24 scalps to his name. Anderson is still fit as a fiddle and would like to continue at the topmost level.

Anderson now has 564 wickets and thus he is 36 wickets away from the 600 wickets. “Just to see Jimmy now, he looks fit and keen and running around, it depends on what he wants to do. He has gone past me and I think the next bar is 600 Test wickets,” McGrath told BBC.

In fact, McGrath believes if Anderson gets to 600 Test wickets, it would be an incredible achievement. It is not easy to be a fast bowler as you have to ball your heart out.

“If he can get to 600 Test wickets, that’s an incredible effort, and if he is still got that drive, that passion to get yourself up, to put the hard work in off the field to carry you through on the field… if he has still got that desire, then he can play as long as he wants.”

The former Australian great believes that there is still some fuel left in James Anderson’s tank. Thus, he can definitely go for 600 wickets in his career highest wicket taker in odi in one match

“I think he’s still got a little bit left in the tank yet,” McGrath said. “I’d like to see Jimmy go and get 600 and then whether he wants to try and knock off one of these dodgy spinners that are still at the top of the tree. I think Kumble is about 619. That’s within range.”

James Anderson is one of the best fast bowlers in the world. He has been a perfect swing master and occupies the summit of the ICC Test rankings.
