Former South African captain and present CSA’s current Director of Cricket, Graeme Smith recently opened up his experiences to face the former Indian World Cup-winning captain and veteran wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni.
Graeme Smith and MS Dhoni both were the top-level captains in international cricket history. Though captain Smith had no success in the ICC tournaments, his Proteas teams were very strong and successful for most of the times in both the home and away assignments. He was South Africa’s best captain as South Africa won 163 matches out of 286 international matches under his captaincy.
On the other hand, Dhoni successfully led the Indian team for a long time and inspired the team to win the ICC World T20 2007, ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, ICC Champions Trophy 2013 and many other trophies.
Dhoni became the first captain to win three different ICC trophies. Under his leadership in the record 332 international matches, India won 178 matches.
Talking about Dhoni’s success as a captain, many credits his cool and calm attitude, which he has achieved mastery to maintain it even in the toughest period of the game.
Smith has also praised Dhoni’s cool and calm attitude. The former Proteas captain never saw any other in world cricket who can replace Dhoni.
Smith told Star Sports show Cricket Connected, “I seriously doubt that you probably find anyone in world cricket that didn’t get on with MS. He went about his business. He was calm, he was collected.”
Graeme Smith also respects Sourav Ganguly
Smith added, “And again, like Sanga, was to spend a fair amount of time with Dada – in administration, we are having a number of conversations over the telephone. He’s always calm, approachable, always interested in a good conversation, so a lot of respect for both men.”
We spent a lot of time together: Gautam Gambhir about MS Dhoni
On the other hand, the former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir also recalled his memory to spend time with MS Dhoni as they were roommates during their service for India A.
Gambhir claimed, “We were roommates for more than a month and all we used to talk about was hair because he had those long hair and how he would maintain that hair and all that stuff. We remember sleeping on the floor, because we had a very small room and the first week, we were discussing how to make this room look bigger.”
“So, we removed the bed out of the room and then we slept on the floor on the mattresses and it was a great moment because we both were young. MS just initially started playing international cricket, we went to Kenya together, Zimbabwe, India A tour together, we spent a lot of time together.”
Recently, Gambhir also claimed that Dhoni was the better limited-overs captain than Ganguly due to having many experienced players in the side.
