Indian women’s T20I captain Harmanpreet Kaur is happy with the growth of Women’s T20 Challenge. She is expecting more teams and more matches in the next season’s Women’s T20 Challenge.
Harmanpreet Kaur-led Supernovas won the 2019 Women’s T20 Challenge crown after beating Velocity in the final of the tournament on last Saturday (11th May) night.
It was the tri-series tournament between Supernovas, Trailblazers and Velocity. Three teams played one match against all other teams, and the top two teams of the final points table advanced to the final of the tournament.
All three teams won one match in the round-robin stage. After Trailblazers beat Supernovas (by two runs) in the opening game of the tournament, Trailblazers suffered a three-wicket defeat against Velocity. Later, Supernovas beat Velocity by 12 runs. While every team had the two points in the final points table, Supernovas and Velocity qualified for the Final due to the higher net run-rate.
In the Final of the tournament, Supernovas snatched a thrilling four-wicket victory on the final ball of the match.
Last year was the inaugural year of Women’s T20 Challenge where Trailblazers and Supernovas played one-off T20 match. Harmanpreet Kaur-led Supernovas won that match by three wickets on the final ball of that match.
We learned a lot from this tournament – Harmanpreet Kaur
Harmanpreet Kaur is happy with the progress of Women’s T20 challenge. She wants a bigger tournament in the next season.
After winning the 2019 Women’s T20 Challenge, Harmanpreet said, “Firstly it was great tournament for me, I learnt a lot from it and the same goes for other players also. We learned a lot from this tournament and that’s what we were expecting.”
She further added, “We wanted to play a T20 league in India and I am really happy the way it went. We are looking for more matches and more teams in the next Women’s T20 League.”
In the final match of this tournament, around 13,000 people supported both the teams on the field. It is undoubtedly a greater side of this contest.
Harmanpreet Kaur also revealed that the foreign players are excited about the bigger tournament
Harmanpreet has also claimed that many overseas players have also wished for the bigger tournament.
She claimed, “It shows how important this league is for the foreign players too. They were always asking when the women’s league was to be played in India where they can come and play. You can see how important these games were for everyone. How keen they were to play here.
“I think everybody was so excited for these games.”
Harmanpreet Kaur spoke about her innings in the final match
In the final game, Mithali Raj-led Velocity managed to score 121/6 (20 overs) in the first innings after they lost the toss.
Chasing down that target, Supernovas had the good second-wicket partnership (44 runs) in the second innings. However, later they faced a batting collapse. But Harmanpreet saved her team in the right moment as she scored 51 runs off 37 balls. While she lost her wicket in the final over, they were seven runs away from the victory. Radha Yadav (10 runs) completed that job with the final-ball four (125/6).
The Player of the Match winner Harmanpreet said about her innings, “I learnt how to finish because depending all the time for sixes is not going to work and sometime you can play along the ground and win the games. I did half the job and Radha Yadav came and finished the game.”
Harmanpreet also praised the Indian youngsters and spoke about the importance of their participation in other leagues.
She added, “A lot of youngsters like Radha Yadav, Jemimah (Rodrigues), Deepti (Sharma) have great future and perhaps they would get an opportunity to play in other leagues and that would help us in building our national team.”
Meanwhile, the 18-year-old Supernovas’ batter Jemimah Rodrigues won the Player of the Tournament award after finishing as the leading run-scorer of the tournament. She scored 123 runs in three innings with an average of 61.50. Her best knock in this tournament was 77* against Velocity during the round-robin stage.
